Help - Importing cars from Germany

    Greetings ppl!

I am planning to buy a BMW, either e28 or e30 and I found several good ones in Germany. I wanted to know your opinion on buying from Germany and also suggestions (maybe another country? any tips welcome). If anybody could share a rough idea on pricing for shipping as well, that would be very helpful.

PS: I am aware that there's a fixed post for the UK, yet I'm not quite sure about mainland Europe.

Thanks in advance for your help :)

    Not totally straightforward ...

Assuming you want to drive the car home, you need a special export number plate and insurance. These are usually available in or near the registration office.(for a price)
The vehicle needs its current registration cancelled and the new export plates registered (and some tax paid of course). The vehicle needs a current NCT (the German equivalent) and in most cases you have to present the vehicle and a heap of papers at said registration office...so you will have to be there during office hours and bring some time, money and lots of papers

see here to get an idea:

Works much more smoothly if you speak German or have someone with you who does.

A private seller will most likely shy away from that kind of hassle and even a dealer would want to be pre-warned and asked nicely if they can assist.

Bought a motorbike from Germany in 2014 and it was a very pleasant experience, used mobile.de to find it, it was a private sale and I only saw it in the flesh when it arrived at my door. Paid 400euro to have someone ship it over (Overlanders). Bike was spotless, seller was an absolute gent. Not a car I know, but similar idea.

I haven't thought about that to be fair, that is definitely something to consider... thanks a bunch!
