Kettle lid glued shut with limescale

My stainless steel kettle lid is completely fused shut with limescale.

I have no idea what the inside of the kettle is like, as I haven't seen it in years (see above!), but I only use filtered water, and I don't think the water is terribly hard, so I'm guessing it's ok.

But I'd like to be able to take the lid off the kettle.

Anyone any tips for freeing it up? I don't really want to take a knife to it, and risk damaging the outside, and I don't think that'll work anyway as it was fairly close-fitting even when it worked.

Kettle is similar to this https://www.homeshop18.com/kenwood-1-7-l-dome-kettle-sk-630a/household-appliances/kitchen-appliances/product:30541031/cid:14943/

Pour a bit of vinegar in the the groove of the lid.. Leave it a while, then try twist it, and repeat...
How long since you cleaned the inside (or outside) of your kettle...?

    A very long time! :o

Too easy just to fill it using the spout, so I've let it go for years and years.

I'll try the vinegar-dripping trick - will just ordinary white chipper vinegar do?
