Licence expires in September, turn 70 in November

    Hey all,

This is a query for my mother, not me. I am just about to renew my licence, so she decided she better check when hers is up. It expires in September 2020 (or might even be October), and she turns 70 in November. If you renew a licence over age 60 it only goes to your 70th birthday and then you need medical cert/etc - will she need to renew for the few weeks and then renew again? Has anyone any experience here?

I know it's over a year away, but seen as she mentioned it, I was curious... Cheers!

The guidance notes (P.2 'Period of Licence') for a driving licence application says the following.....

If you are over age 60 your licence will be granted up to age 70, if you are aged over 67 but less than 70 years of age a three year licence will be granted

My reading of this is that between age 60 and 66, they give you a licence which expires just before your 70th birthday but to cater for people in your mother's situation, they give people aged 67-69 a three year licence. She would derive the maximum benefit from this provision and (without a medical report) get a licence which will take her to just short of her 73rd birthday.
