I'm looking to upgrade my current laptop (lasted almost 10 years so cant have any complaints)

Its main use will be office, media consumption and internet machine.

I have played around with surface laptop 2, xps 13, macbook air & Pro and liked the feel of all 4 (a bit lost on apple ios) so I would be leaning towards a windows laptop.

    However, I dont feel my usage would warrant spending the price any of the above. So could anyone recommend a more wallet friendly laptop with the following requirements;
    1. Light and thin
    2. Good battery
    3. Slim bezels
    4. Good screen
    5. SSD
    6. High build quality

All your requirements are for a high end laptop which you dont want to pay for?

They want high-end for stuff other than spec/performance. Which is hard to find. Which is why they're asking for recommendations.

Thanks for getting where I am coming from. If there are no reasonable alternatives, I would be willing to pay a premium. It just seems a waste when I wouldn't be doing any editing on it or gaming. I was just worried I would spend €1100+ for the spec I mentioned to find out that there is a €6/700 laptop that ticks the boxes I listed.

Take a look at the Vostro series. Bezel isn't as slim as the ones your looked at, and the battery life isn't great... but the price isn't bad when you compare it to the xps, macbooks or surface.

Getting the premium features that you want, without the high end performance - and the cost isn't going to be an easy task

The XPS ticks all your boxes, but every single one that I've had has died prematurely or had other niggly problems.

I didn't know there were issues with them. The only reason I was looking at the xps over the surface is that I was afraid the alcantara cover on the surface would look quite dirty quite quickly.

yes this for £600 sterling is a great price for this laptop. really really light and capable. 4-core i5. 8gb ram is soldered but 8gb enough for most. the 4-core i5 is a bit throttled in this chassis but still very nice machine imo.

    comprehensive review

or even this other asus for £480 is very good. just buy an 8gb ram stick to upgrade the ram (can be upgraded in this model).
still all-metal build and light at 1.4kg. i3 8130 enough for most people's tasks.

that's pretty heavy tho at 4.1 pounds / 1.86 kg.

you'd want 1.5 kg or under to be classed as (and feel) light imo

the other one (ux391) for 600 is 30% lighter though at just over a 1kg and is beautifully engineered.

little difference between the i5 chips really.

it also has thunderbolt 3 which opens up some options on external graphics cards if you ever wanted that as an option.

Might be a strange question, but are those asus laptops comfortable on ones lap? the way the lid/hinge comes to a point looks a bit odd. Apart from that they do look to tick all my boxes

don't have one but I can't see it causing an issue.

being literally a "laptop" I'm sure that was tested!

it's only a relatively slight angle.

a number of other companies have also done the same thing - it's more ergonomic for typing apparently.

its actually mentioned in a few reviews as a bit more precarious than youd be used to on a lap tbh

really? - quick search and the first non-selected results that I came across talking about lap use actually have it as a benefit in that case

    https://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/review-asus-zenbook-s-review-simply-very-good-ultrabook/closer-look-11

"I can’t speak to whether 5.5 degrees is more comfortable than some other figure like 10 or 12 degrees, but I can say that it’s quite comfortable to type on in practice. In addition, it feels quite good to use on your lap as well and the added air gap means that you’ll feel less discomfort from heat. The additional space between the laptop base and the tabletop also helps improve ventilation for the notebook, where cool air is drawn in through the bottom and expelled through vents hidden in the hinge."

    https://www.cnet.com/reviews/asus-zenbook-s-2018-preview/

Aside from the lightweight "ultraportable" design, the standout for the ZenBook S is its ErgoLift hinge. When you open it up, the screen pushes the keyboard up on a 5.5° tilt to make it easier to type when the laptop is actually on your lap or on a table. Close it up and that hinge disappears to give you a slim body that'll slip into your bag
