Anyone else can't stand artifical sweeteners?

This whole sugar tax in the UK and Ireland along with the introduction of artificial sweeteners in popular drinks like Ribena, Sprite, Coke is terrible.

I HATE the taste. I heard its genetic but even then the point someone rightly made on thejournal was, instead of trying to curb obesity with taxes and sweeteners, why not teach kids/adults moderation?

I can't stand this nanny state ruining drinks that were once good. I swear to god, non alcoholic beer tastes better than the Sprite Zero ****e..

You're not legally obligated to drink Sprite Zero if you find it distasteful. I'm not fond of sweeteners either, but there are alternatives out there...

I still haven’t darkened the doors of a Subway since the last time I was told they don’t stock “full fat” soft drinks, in either their dispensers or in the fridge.

Diet drinks are vile. No one should be faced with a “choice” like that. I refused to take one on the ground of principle, and “taste”.

I miss lucozade and 7up when I'm sick.

Pepsi max is alright, coke zero is gick.

What's worse is there's nothing else available with sugar. Original coke has sugar. But there's nothing if I want a glucose or lemon & lime flavoured drink. Whereas we used to have 7up, sprite, shop brand names and then nothing.

Just had a tomato that smelled and tasted of orange! I don't know what kind of fu**ery is going on, but I like it.

    Maybe you're taste blind.

    Look at the labels.

Any "modified" sugar drink will have 4.7g sugar per 100g, rest will be the sweeteners.

As said above, I've found that so far only coke regular (and also Club, thank goodness) have the full sugar content - 10-12g per 100g.

Used to love Irn Bru, until The Happening!

Club orange and regular coke are the only 'normal' minerals left now, though I'm sure it won't be long until they're destroyed too.
Bought a bottle of lucozade recently and threw most of it down the sink. Absolutely vile.

Ya they have destroyed Lucozade. Is the lucozade though that u buy in a pub different cause I got lucozade there last week in a pub and it tasted quite good. Maybe the lucozade in the glass bottles is the original.

Agree, H2O has been good enough for man(/lady)kind for about 200,000yrs.

A little of what you fancy does you good. I think as long as you don’t drink them all day the original sugared version is fine.

There are many different sweeteners. I like aspartame. I don't add it to anything, but I like it in things like diet coke and other things with no sugar.

I can understand people not liking saccharin for its notorious aftertaste, I'm in the same both there. But I'm not sure anyone has a legitimate aversion to aspartame.

What original sugared versions? Club orange and Coke?

I think alot of people hasn't noticed the recipe changes and think original printed on the label is equal to sugar. That isn't the case anymore. Lucozade original has got sweeteners. There's nothing original about it.

7up, Sprite, lucozade, Fanta, orangina, cidona, irn-bru, San Pellegrino, capri-sun, tk red and white lemonade. That's 11 drinks with sweeteners. All these aren't original sugared drinks anymore.

Is that why they’ve taken the “diarrhoea” warning off the label? Noticed it was gone the last time I had a bottle, it didn’t taste great.

Yes you are right. Coke and club orange and maybe lilt are the only soft drinks I ever have. I didn’t realize all those other drinks had been changed. It’s probably only a matter of time before they change the rest too. What I usually do is put a couple of slices of lemon or oranges into a jug of water and put it in the fridge. Tastes lovely when chilled. I love a glass of coke or orange now and then too.

Foods and beverages containing artificial sweeteners make me ravenously hungry. Wanted to lose a few lbs one time so when I went to pub I got a vodka and diet Sprite. Just one. Massive chipper feed followed.

Yes but now in pubs or cafes when you ask for 7up or Sprite they give you Sprit Zero

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

You were making some moderately valid points right up until this pleb term from the Tory tabloids.

As far as I’m concerned the only soft drinks I acknowledge to still exist are Coca Cola classic, Pepsi, club orange and club rock shandy (which unfortunately has sweeteners but still has the full sugar content). What pisses me off is in new Coca Cola ads the actors are all seen drinking cans of Coke Zero instead of what should be their flagship brand, normal Coke. It’s so typical that diet drinks have become popular in the last ten years since social media and smartphones led to everyone becoming more conscious of their appearance and not wanting to get fat. As someone said, 7-up and lucozade used to be great when you were sick but they are now pale shadows of their former selves. I used to love Fanta lemon and exotic too but the former is now a weak low sugar version with sweeteners and the latter is not available with sugar so is not worth even acknowledging to exist.

I used to love the San Pellegrino soft drinks as they were a nice twist on normal flavours (with a few unusual ones too) but now they're a pale wretched imitation of what they were.

Pepsi Max was always the best of the colas (even original Coke), but there has never been a good sugar-free orange drink. I had hopes for the orange Club Zero, but no. The lemon version is okay, though.

I am addicted to Diet coke.

I don't like any sweeteners in sugar free sweets though. They give me the runs.

Said no one, ever. (until now maybe).

Didn't diet Pepsi drop it over concerns and several countries ban it already, or at least considering doing so.

Just buy the diet drinks and add your own sugar.

Mentos have a lot of sugar.
