Hi, I am entertaining friends from Liverpool and want to take them to the pub today to watch match against Southampton.

I don’t leave the house much as part of my work can leave me wide open to being silenced by conspirators.

Do pubs show the 3pm games in the Republic of Ireland now for the premier league?

I got a reply elsewhere and maybe for public record it appears that pubs are allowed show 3pm Saturday premier league games now.

    Site for checking this stuff.

Today's 3pm is Southampton v Liverpool - Premier Sports HD 1 (RoI only)

There has never been a restriction on Saturday 3pm games in Ireland. It was never the traditional local game time here anyway. The only issue was nobody showed them initially - RTE were first with a 3pm package years (decades?) ago and it's been an ROI only pay package since.

Sky bought out the local restrictions from the FAI in the early 90s in exchange for putting floodlights in every LOI ground. It was midday Sunday or 3pm Sunday from memory - the floodlights allowed teams go to to Friday evenings and so on.

Again from memory only Tolka and Dalymount had lights at the time with Finn Park having already ordered them

The English premier league I’m talking about.

As am I. You are thinking of the UK where they can't show any football matches at 3pm Saturday.

It's the local league that is allowed set the blackout for TV football - any football - and the LOI were paid off to not blackout any time

Yes? as far as I was aware it was just because the English teams didn’t want Irish people staying at home and not heading across the water to watch the games. Or they were too lazy to divide the border.

Are you saying the van here was to stop people from staying away from bray v shelbourne?

    I never knew that.

The UK 3pm ban is apparently to protect local non league teams, our long long gone Sunday ban was to try protect the LOI.

In the pre digital days it would have been too expensive to provide an ROI only service for the games they can't show to the UK (except for RTE who were ROI only anyway) but when that changed the big operators provides ROI only services quickly

Mod note:Moved from Dublin County North - I think it's better suited to the Television forum.
