A work colleague bought a 171 Leaf in Jan privately and has just discovered that a service was due in feb, is his warranty now toast?

Get it booked into Nissan ASAP.
There’s usually some leeway each way. It will stand for him going forward if he needs any good Will from
    Nissan.

Warranties don’t go invalid just because of lack of service. If it’s a serviceable part that should be lubricated or serviced and it goes faulty you should have maintained it.
On the other hand the on board charger goes faulty should still be covered by warranty
