Skoda Superb ex-taxi

    Hi All,

My 07 Mondeo has finally decided to call it a day injector issues and i cant justify putting more money into it.

I am looking for something big as a second family car that is cheap and cheerful, my commute is limerick to Shannon everyday so about 20k with traffic through the city.

Will be changing the wifes car for an SUV or MPV soon also.

Not afraid of a high mileage car and have heard stories about the dealer but going into it with eyes open.

My logic is yes its an ex taxi with high mileage but it would have been tested every year and looks to have a full service history.

If i buy it i would straight away get my mechanic to do a full service, do the water pump and belt. Possibly change the discs and pads as well.

Still looking at having a 131 reg Superb on the road for less that 5.5k

If the clutch, gearbox or engine go you could get one handy enough second hand.

Any thoughts or am i mad?

Also looking at what i think is an ex garda car with high mileage but leaning towards the Superb

I think you’re mad buying off either of those. Fair enough they’re cheap

agree with other poster, intergalactic mileage on each. i wouldnt part with over 2k for either. but if i had to, id guess skoda would hanlde the mileage better. hyundai is better equipped, but skoda for me

I'd go older and lower mileage for same price if you don't want to increase budget. You will never sell either of those again if you have to.
They could be fine but you'll get lower mileage 2011 cars for just as cheap

    Yes.

Colm, I have read several of your posts over the years where you have offered invaluble advice on cars.

But you have thrown out 1 line and 1 word without offering valid reasons you think that this would be a bad purchase.

I have nothing invested in this but I would like to hear some back up from decenting voices when people look for opinions.

If I wasn't fussy with my cars and wanted a recent reg plate with a decent spec for 3k I would grab it.

i40 wouldn't be able for much more unless you want to spend money.

The 1.6 superb are absolutely sh1te.

Try at least get the 2.0 TDI.

Look at megane or fluence as they can be got quite cheap.

I’m being careful about what I say but basically from my time in the cars game I know enough about the first garage and their practices back in the day to completely avoid the place. That’s all I’m saying.

There's a slim chance, if the i40 is a 142 reg that it still has a whisker of manufacturers warranty left which would be a big plus, enough to sway me to buy it. I'd get it straight to a dealer and complain about everything under the sun and get it tidied up for free while I still could.

If there was a gun to my head and I had to pick one and there's no warranty on the i40, it'd be the Skoda. Has it had the emissions update? If so most major engine components will be covered by Skoda afterwards which is a nice bit of comfort.

Both are ropey but I'd say the Skoda would take the miles better, the i40's are a bit ****.

Jesus I'd seriously consider any other car out there than either of those.

Seriously, go a couple of years older and get something with genuine low mileage and good service history.

You could do a lot worse than getting a Renault Fluence 1.5 dci. Try get the Dynamique or above in trim.

I'd second a Fluence or Megane but as Colm says, are you selling it?

Nothing wrong if you are but just fair to point it out.

No I merely only suggested a well specified Fluence.

Are you selling all the cars you suggest?

If I didn't have a company car I'd consider a Fluence or a Megane in Dynamique or higher trim.

The only issue I have with the megane is how hard it's getting in or out as I constantly hit my head.... Also the seat doesn't go back far enough unfortunately.

I don’t usually suggest cars for sale in my county.

I live between Limerick and Dublin.

I'll remember next time when I suggest a car for sale to avoid these counties for fear people think I've a vested interest. Silly me!!

Actually I better exclude Cork too as I've family there. Then my aunt lives in Donegal, I'll exclude that county too. Better look at my family tree later to see if I should exclude any other counties.

Do they actually sell cars in Clare?

Hard to get a baby in and out of a car seat in the back
    Very low doorways
Still though, 1.5 megane estate is a good car to go
