Selling Stock on Donedeal- what to watch out for?

    Hi all,

Have both bought and sold sheep and cattle off Donedeal in the past but not in any big numbers.
Am thinking of putting nearly 120 good forward store lambs up on it,worth around € 80 euro each.so around €10k worth.
Just wondering how do people who sell large numbers of sheep or valuable cattle on Donedeal look for payment?
Am in Mayo here but say for example of someone from Midlands or further afield comes down and buys them do people accept a Cheque and let the stock head away on a trailer or do they wait till the Cheque clears to release the animals iykwim.
In the good old days you could ring the mans bank and they would say if he was good for it but with ‘modern’ life that’s not going to happen anymore and with that GDPR nonsense....
Thanks for any replies from people who sell or buy stock regularly on Donedeal.

Ps- I know the buyer is entitled to fair play too.

The quickest and safest is to get them to transfer the money into your bank account. With a cheque or Bank Draft, when you lodge them , they will show up in your account within the day but they will not have 'cleared' yet. Not sure the procedure of how to check if they have cleared, but your bank will tell ya.

I wouldn't let them go until the money is cleared in my account anyway. Have heard a few horror story's over the years.

If they are genuine buyers they will have no hesitation in either transferring the money into you account - it can take a couple of days to show especially if two different banks are involved or accepting that a cheque/bank draft has to clear your account - which will take 5 working days from the day you lodge it. We occasionally sell bunches of cattle and that is the way we operate but we ensure that the buyers write down each animals tag number and I take a photo of the list on my phone.

If the potential buyer doesn't want to operate that way then let them off. I understand that store lambs are in demand at present so I'm sure you will have no problem selling them. Best of luck.

A nice big lump of cash, and he can take them that day, or wait till the check clears. Are you going running around the country trying to get your sheep. There should be no problem if he has it in his account

Sold a couple of times but got badly caught once. I eventually got it if him but I had to go find out where he was working and corner him there. I know of a couple of people who have been caught by well advertised cattle dealers. One only recently with bouncy cheques. My advice is bring them to a mart.

Thanks for the replies.....as I kinda felt myself the best way for all concerned is a bank transfer, could even be done over internet banking, the sheep could have their tags read and put on a list and collected when transfer has definitely gone through. If purchaser not willing to do that let them off.Have heard of people getting caught with fake bank drafts and fake cash so wouldn’t be happy taking a ball of cash.

As regards selling in Mart....am p/t farmer so if I can sell at home it’s less stress on me,the animals and the buyer.

Does anyone know to check lodged cheques online, to know if they have fully cleared? I lodged cheques yesterday and yesterday they were 'In Progress' online. I checked there now and they are all showing up as 'Completed Transactions'.

It says it takes 6 working days for Cheques from different Bank. Do I just wait the 6 days or is there any other way.

Is there no way online to check?

Watch out for fake €50 notes if being paid in cash. Another problem is tyre kickers, just be firm on your price, depending on the deal, give them a bit of luck money, your decision not theirs.

A friend of mine up the country had a large bundle of cattle to sell and was inundated with calls. Showed them to a feed lot buyer and agreed to sell heaviest. Deal was dependent on cattle being weighed on arrival in feedlot. Friend wasn't overly happy as he wanted to weigh and sell from yard but agreed on basis he would travel with them and be present at weighing. Weeks passed and no sign of cattle moving and no reply to calls made, so he readvertised and sold some through the mart. Bucko finally rang back to moan about how he reneged on the deal only for friend to fcuk him out of it for acting the bollix. He thinks he had a lucky escape....
    Be careful out there.........

A cheque can clear same day if its drawn from the same bank . Ie BOI to BOI . If its the same branch it can be cleared on the spot if you ask the bank clerk for immediate funds .

Cheques from a different bank ie AIB to BOI can clear within 24 hours and also seen it take 5 days . it really depends and similar rule and timeframes with Drafts

When I bought the baler a few weeks ago I used a draft to pay him and he was happy with that

Lad I bought the wrapper off wanted sterling cash or a draft (but I would have to wait for the draft to clear, which meant an extra drive up the north to deliver the draft and then return a week later for the wrapper . so I got him cash.

both where left with cash deposits which were returned in full when I paid and collected

It might be worth looking at one of these chip and pin machines for a Visa debit card. I have seen some smaller shops using them rather than the AIB, BOI machines.

I know one of the benefits of private trade is cutting out the marts fees, but when I sell over DoneDeal I always contact the local mart who facilitate it. Once I tell them how many I have to sell we agree on a fixed fee and I incorporate this into the price.

Buyer pays the mart and cards get released with a purchase cert, and they post out the cheque to me. Served me well and is secure.

Most marts happy enough to do this as it gives them some business.
