A much asked quesion type but would appreciate some advice.

Basically: Avensis 2008 2.2 Diesel in good condition (new NCT etc)

Car has been great, 44,000km in past year. I have been told 4 injectors are needed. Cost - 580 all in. 284,000km on clock.

So, move on or fix? Thanks!

What type of car is it (some have value, some dont) and what would you buy if you scrap it?

    Sorry, edited post. Avensis.

The plan was to get it past 300,000km (284 on clock now)......basically drive it into the ground!

Hard to tell if its going to be problematic in the future but theres a good chance it will at the age and mileage. But not a certainty.
I drove older cars up to this year with lower values and when youre getting bills for 580 for a car worth very little its normal and probably wise to think about moving it on. In my case it was a good excuse to get a new car because I fancied a change anyway but I am not sure this applies to you.
But its a guessing game how good it will be from here on in, and what has already been replaced and what is due for replacement at further expense.

If you try to sell car you get nothing for it - I assume it failed its NCT?
So you need to weigh the options
    * Buy brand new with warranty
    * Buy second-hand from dealer with some warranty
    * Buy second-hand privately without warranty and potentially hidden issues
    * Pay for the injectors and maybe get years of motoring out of it

    Thanks - good points.

It just passed NCT so all good on that front!

No idea! Think Irish but aware 2.2 wasn't a big seller here (maybe not at all?)

Is the speedo in miles or km?

    hhmmm

    Tough one

Pay €580 for 4 injectors with a lifespan of 160k km for a perfectly good 10 year old Toyota

Pay €30,000 for a brand new car

Pay €10,000 for a few year old 160k km car that might also need consumable items like injectors, belts, tyres, pumps etc soon

Pay €1,000+ for a 10+ year old diesel and hope for the best

I would go with €580 for injectors

At 580 I'd take the chance tbh.

What you need to consider is things like what would you be replacing it with if you scrapped it.

A newer 2nd hand could bring it's own issues.

Is that 580 including fitting though??????.

Spending 580 is always going to be cheaper than buying another car especially a used one that's an unknown quantity when it comes to it's history around reliability.

If there are no other problems with the car I'd spend the 580 to keep it going, if that 580 only gets you another year or so out of it then its money well spent imo.

Uk ones had head gasket issues.
    Irish ones didnt.
Just another reason to keep it or move it on

Is it the straw that broke the camels back? Otherwise for 580, I'd be inclined to repair it and keep it going. Running it to failure, pretty much means to a point you've a big repair. It doesn't sound like a lot of work is being asked for it.

    Thanks all.

Very reliable so far, just an issue with brake lines. 580 includes fitting (4x120 plus 100 labour) I think if even the car goes another 3 months the 580 it will be worth it.

Part of me was hoping it was a 1k plus repair.....easy choice then!

I'd take a chance on it,,,sometimes the devil you know is much better than the devil you don't..let us know how it go's, OK?

While the 2.2 does have a reputation for head gasket issues there isn't a reason why Irish ones would specifically escape.

Engines made in same place - with same processes etc (ditto the whole car).

The head gasket doesn't really change the equation that much incidentally - it's still worth taking the chance and spending the 580 imo.

580 for 4 injectors sounds very cheap, are they secondhand? If it works out I'd go for it. What's wrong with your ones? Make sure you change the filter at the same time. 580 is small money.

    Fuel filter?

It doesn't sound unusual for a car of that age and mileage to need new injectors. I'd consider it a service item at that stage (like clutch, etc.). If it's generally reliable and you're not interested in changing for a newer car, I'd go for it.

The head gasket problem is with the 180 versions (usually badged as T180 or DCAT, or similar), engine code is 2AD-FHV. This engine was never sold in Ireland in the Mk2.

The regular 2.2, with 148 bhp, which most 2.2 Avensis diesels are (including in the UK), does not have this problem to the best of my knowledge. The engine code is 2AD-FTV. They did sell this in Ireland IIRC but very few were bought.

Thanks again all. Confirmed - 4 injectors.

    120 a piece plus 100 labour from here: http://www.dieselinjectorrepair.ie
    -includes 1 year warranty

Oddly, I never really considered injectors a 'consumable' - you live and learn!

Interesting to see how it goes!

I'll update, just in case anyone does a search.

All four injectors replaced with refurbished units, including fuel filter (and top up of oil).

Apparently, they were replaced before but incorrectly leading to damage. That explained the erratic idle and occasional start hesitation!

12 month warranty with before and after tests. All done within 24 hours.

So far, highly impressed. Car, with 300km driven, running excellent.

Very good. You made the right decision.

just think of it as a running cost and repair. It owes you nothing at that mileage and is relatively young still

Agree, essentially 1 year driving for 580 plus a service - cheap
