Charging in France

We brought the car to France on the hols this year. I’m sure loads of you have done the charging abroad thing successfully, but our first time and there was a bit of faff until we figured it out.

TLDR: Credit card and New motion card did not work, Apple Pay and google pay did the trick.

We got a NewMotion card before we went, they claimed to give access to public charging points across Europe, on a pay as you go basis.

First up, new motion card does not work on the French chargers we tried. it read the card, started the charge and then knocked off 10 seconds later. We emailed them, phoned their helpline during and after the charging failed. They told us it must be the chargers, as our account was normal. We tried 8 chargers over the few weeks, all the same behaviour. (Also note, their website says 8am to 9pm support, it’s actually 10am to 4pm British time, mon-fri. Outside these hours you get a message recording, with the promise of a callback which doesn’t take place )

Second way to charge on the public infrastructure = swipe your credit card and pay that way. Contactless only as there is no keypad for a pin. A small additional charge of 1 euro applied for not being set up with some company (which we were trying to avoid with newmotion). Plus 20c per KW. We have contactless Visa cards, and these worked to get the charge started and going. The problem arose when disconnecting. The contactless was refused by the chargers. So our cable was stuck as we could not pay. We phoned the company and they manually released the cable (and didn’t charge us). A phone call to Visa let us know that contactless does not work on their cards across various parts of France.

Third way, was to use google pay and Apple Pay on our phones, as a bit of a dupe for contactless. This did the trick. Started, charged , stopped and disconnected successfully.

Hope that saves someone some time.

I am hoping to bring my EV to France, is there a card other than New motion that works

At the charger, what is involved in using google pay to stop and stop charge

PS my car has CCS , so I guess Ionity France an option ?

    Wish I knew!

Step 1: You choose a side on the panel (P1 or P2 here)
Step 2: Swipe either your phone contactless, your credit card, or your chargecard. (All three swiped here for us)
Step 3. The door on the unit opens, you plug in, and it starts charging
Step 4: Swipe the same card to exit.

For Step 4, credit card locked our cable and wouldn't release it. Phone payment worked.

If you are asking me how to use apple pay or android pay... it's the same as you would use it at home here in shops. Set it up, and use it like a contactless card.

We didn't use Chargemap, as we were only going to be there for 2 weeks, and it's a 20 euro setup fee. Wouldn't be worth our while. It also didn't seem to support the Brev' network, and those were the only chargers we found in north brittany. (Apart from Tesla)

Did you activate your New Motion account and setup your banking details?

I had the same issues in holland until I setup the direct debit features on my account and then my card worked as described.

I've had good experience with Plugsurfing, you can just start charging via the APP, worth having the RFID Tag as well tho as many of the street chargers are RFID Only.

Yes. Activated and connected bank. All working and confirmed by new motion. They said it was a supplier issue in France.
