Are there any smartphone apps for internet radio that doesn't have ads?

TuneIn and others constantly have ads interrupting the broadcast. This is very frustrating.

An ad before a station starts playing may be inserted by the actual station and not be removable

Could it be buffering (connection loss). I think probably everyone gets an ad on station load, this is used to establish a 20s or 30s buffer. If you have ads inserted during a listen, I wonder is it to recover buffer loss due to poor signal.

I use TuneIn daily, very rarely do I get ads interrupting a listen, but I notice after the as you pick up the programme around where it dropped.

I do almost always get the as at the start.

You should only get an ad on TuneIn when you start listening first or when you change the station. I listened for three hours solid on Sunday and only got the one ad at the beginning.

If you're constantly getting ads, something is going wrong, most likely your connection is dropping out.

Assuming you mean ads for TuneIn (or whatever app) itself, not ads that are on the station anyway? If so, I've got TuneIn Pro (which I think was a one-off €9.99, but I could be amnesiac) and I can't remember ever hearing an ad for TuneIn itself.
