All looking for a few recommendations. Currently have an 2011 e91 318d msport, mileage is starting to creep up and its time to move it on, had a few niggles with it I was lucky with and no spare wheel and running run flats is a pain. Also my commute is about to get longer in the next few months so staying with a diesel. Currently average about 450-500k a week but will rise a small bit. Pushing towards another estate again as its handy for bikes, surfboards etc. Finding it hard to look beyond the superb at the moment or maybe a mondeo (Dont know much about the mondeo) . If anyone has some recommendations or advice to add I'd greatly appreciate it

Octavia is still quite big too but boot isn’t as wide as the Superb. Obviously the whole car is a bit smaller than the Superb but still bigger than your 3er.

I'll add it to the list. Ideally id like to stand the bike up straight in the car (with front wheel taken off). I can do it in the 3 series but I've to take out the boot floor and drop the fork into the "wheel in a bag" slot. Keeps mess to a minimum when loading up with a dirty mtb. The towing capacity of the superb is making it attractive also. I dont tow stuff often but gives me the flexibility

I mountain bike every week with a 132 Merc E300 Hybrid Estate (which I'm currently selling :D ) so that I can buy a facelift version again. Mileage is getting on, but only 140k miles so not astronomical.

No more expensive to service than a Superb and IMO a more premium option.

Back on this buzz again. Almost a year on, still talking about changing  . So basically my commute is changing again. I've gone from travelling on National roads and patches of dual carriageway on my work commute to more substantial time on secondary and regional roads. Surprise surprise they're rough as s**t in the e91 . Like the mazda 6 on paper but any research on the diesel engine just fills you with dread. Now looking for something to soak up the rough roads so not sure how well the sline, msport, and st diesel etates fit the bill anymore. A tiguan or yeti are appealing. I know id be loosing boot space with either of these but its not as big a priority anymore. Again any advice welcome, and yes I've been trawling donedeal in my spare time budget would be max 15k

For Secondary and Regional roads, I'd still be taking an estate over something higher in terms of handling, but that's just me.

I find the W212, even in AMG-line spec, pretty comfortable on R-Roads. A 5 series would certainly be the better drivers car, but less comfortable over bumps.

I'm in the comfort over handling department for the commuter at the moment. I normally have a second more "fun" car to mess about with to feed that urge

    How about an A6 estate?

A couple of nice examples available

This one has 132,000 miles and the timing belt was just done at 120k

This one has 158,000 miles and shows as NCT to July 2022, although the NCT site says December this year. They probably plan to put a new NCT on it. Also has a tow bar if you want to fit bicycle carrier etc

    Those 2 above are automatic

This one is a 2013 manual model with 108,000 miles and NCT until May 2022

Finally, the perfect version for use on both secondary roads and national roads...

A 2012 Audi A4 Allroad Quattro with adaptive air suspension. Has 120,000 miles covered and NCT until November 2021. It's an A4, so slightly smaller than the A6, but still good size compared with the E91 and it's a manual gearbox

All above available for under 15k

I've given a glance at them but id prefer to buy something around the 100k mile mark so that pushes most out of my budget. I put up around 20k miles a year so try to factor in 2-3 years of use and getting some bit of reasonable money back when selling/ trading again. That allroad is the first I've seen for that kind of price and fits the bill pretty well

For estates of that age and mileage, what point in a cars life do clutches start needing to be replaced ?

Depends on the type of driver its had over its life and if you've been unlucky with the clutch starting to fail itself. My e91 is pushing towards 150k miles and still on its original clutch. I haven't been pulling trailers with my current car due to no hitch and I do very little town driving. Luck of the draw really when it comes to clutch replacement

Are those Allroad air suspension units prone to failure? I don't know that model but I know the early ones gave a lot of trouble and the fix was not cheap.

Don't see many of these around

Real looker but those wheel prob wont suit your driving. Would need to meet in the middle on price

That Passat looks to be great value. Kinda tempting even :)
    I wouldn’t be put off by 18s.
Pity it’s 150PS and not 190 but it would still be plenty powerful.

Would be due a belt now.

The passat is lovely alright. Had read a few horror stories online that kinda pushed me away from them. Id have no problem with 18s once the car has decent suspension to soak up the bumps. Current car is around the same power which I find is plenty for the commuting machine.
F31 is a great looking machine but id suspect the ride isnt a million miles away from my own so doesnt fit the bill. Find run flats very hard on the road, my own was night and day when i got rid of them, and there's the whole no spare wheel issue then.
