I'm planning on doing trailer licence test.
I looked on theory test website and it says if A theory test has not previously been completed, it must be now done before you can get learner permit.
Now I got my car licence before theory tests were needed however I have done the theory test for C licence.
Do I still have to go and do the car theory test in order to get my trailer learner permit.

Is it a car trailer licence (BE) or the artic (CE) you’re going for? The artic covers the lot and as you already have that theory test done is have thought you’d be ok. If it’s just the category BE you’ll have to do the theory test.

There was an amnesty for the car/trailer licence that ran a few years ago alright but it’s long expired.

    No, car trailer licence BE.
It's just it was poorly stated on theory test website saying if you have done a theory test, it's only a matter of applying for permit.
It didn't make any reference to categories.
You would imagine that the C licence theory covers much more than the car one.
That would be wishful thinking I guess.

Done a theory test "in that category"
So for BE you have to do a theory test in B to be exempt

Also worth noting that a CE does not cover vehicles with DGVW below 3.5t if towing. You need a BE to tow with a DGVW <3500kg, a CE is restricted to vehicles with MAM/DGVW of over 3.5t

    Is this true?

All i can say is that when i did my artic (CE) test i got all the E categories at once because i already had B,C,D.

I'd hope that is still the case.
If they see fit to bring attic drivers in to do car trailer tests, the country really is run by idiots.

Only in this bonkers country would they happen. Imagine if you’ve proved yourself competent to reverse an artic and they’d refuse you a category BE licence. The artic supersedes the lot anyway. When I passed the run god I tried for the car and trailer, chancing my arm of course, no joy, same when I got the bus licence. All in the name of articulate.
