Looking for a Yaris 06 + version

    Hi All

Currently in the market for a small car for school runs. It will be doing no more the 3k a year.

I'm thinking the Yaris would be a good option. Looking on line the shape seems to have changed in 2006.

Is the 2006- model as good as the previous version ?

I know the older version was practically bomb proof for reliability. Both seem to be 1 litre . Is it the same engine ?

    Thanks
    Barr

The older one has a nicer engine and it’s better quality IMO.
The newer model is safer and slightly bigger though.

The engine in the old one was a smooth 4 cylinder, the newer model is a rough 3 cylinder.

I'd agree with Colm. My missus has the 06. Having said that, it's great on petrol and goes along well enough. It will do motorway speeds well enough too. She'd head down to Courtown from Dublin a good few times a year.

The boot is small. There's no getting away from that, although the rear seats slide forwards if you need an extra couple of inches, and fold flat too.

Parts are cheap if you do need them. Standard tyres are 15 inch so it holds the road well enough for what it is.

I'm 6'3" and if I set the driver's seat to my liking, and then sit behind with the rear seat slid back, I have leg room.

Overall they are an honest enough car and cheap to insure too.

If buying the 06+ Yaris. aim for either a Luna or Sol model. These have extra airbags, height adjustable seat, reach adjustable steering, remote radio, leather wheel, better radio and a few other visual bits.
You’ll know them easily because they have colour coded handles as opposed to black handles on Terra or Strata models.

Herselfs one is ex UK and it's the basic model which is a T2 spec. So higher than that would start getting you some of the toys. T spirit would be the highest UK spec.

Thanks lads , didn't realise it only had 3 cylinders . Its mostly city driving so won't be laboured much.

Is there any weak points reliability wise ? Alot of the ones for sale have high mileage (for small cars) so probably well able.

I wouldn't be a fan of the second generation Yaris, they were not as well built as the first generation and some of the materials used of very low quality.

A Daihatsu Sirion is worth a look at if you want to stick to 1.0 litre, mechanically it's very similar to the Yaris.

Better still a Suzuki Swift and screw the 1.0 tax.

They can have water pump failure, no big deal as it’s powered off the aux belt. They can burn a sup of oil too.

Just had a look at DD , only 12 for sale in the whole country , I take it they weren't the biggest seller :pac:

That was about 4 per dealer :)

Daihatsu were never a big seller here - poor choice of models, tiny dealer network and non existing marketing. Old school type Japanese build quality though.

If you can look beyond 1.0 litre then a Ford Fiesta and Renault Clio are worth considering, both would be 1.2 litre. The 2006 onwards Clio especially feels more modern and grown up than most other superminis of similar vintage.

How much are you looking to spend OP?

Nothing major by the sounds of it . Are they on a timing chain ?

Trying to keep it bangernomic territory < €2k

Trouble with that Subaru (apart from the asking price ) would be the cost of parts (new and second hand).
