Heating in apartment explained

    Hi guys,

I live in an older apartment. We have electric storage heaters and no gas. Everything is ran off electricity. As there are only two of us we never have the immersion on. It is permanently turned off. We have no boiler.

When washing a few dishes we just use the kettle if needed. My (very silly) query is:

As the immersion is off we have no hot water in the bathroom sink and kitchen sink. Fair enough. But how is it we have hot water in the shower and for the washing machine etc. Can someone explain to me how the system works.

Is it just that the electic shower heats the cold water instantly and same with the washing machine?

Sorry for the stupid question 😅 literally any education appreciated ðŸ‘

    Top marks, Absolutely correct.
But are many different types of shower also, so dont assume everybody has the same..

But why not use the immersion ? its not going to cost much more than what you are already paying.

Washing machine only has one feed which is cold water.
Washing machine takes in cold water and heats it up.

With your shower, if you have an electric shower such as a Triton, Mira etc. then it heats the water on the fly.

Other apartments may have a tank & pump system. So the hot water tank needs to be heated first & a pump will pump the hot water to the shower.

Some tanks may also be "split" for sink & bath. So when timer clock is set to "sink" it will only heat the smaller tank that supplies the sink rather than the bath.

Personally, I hate electric showers so have to use a pump system. In that case I need to make sure that the water is heated at the times I usually take a shower or bath.
Usually 1hr of heating is required.

As your apartment has storage heaters I'm assuming that you have a dual rate electricity meter. So electricity used overnight (midnight to 8am I think) is charged at half price. So if you would like to have hot water in the kitchen and bathroom sink, set the immersion to come on during these hours. If the hot water cylinder is reasonably modern (insulated) it should keep the water warm for most of the day.
