Looking at a 1.6 petrol Nissan qasqai 2009. Friend saying great and reliable but reviews say 2/10. Your thoughts? What would you recommend for a somewhat spacious car that's hatch back to have big dogs in back. Currently have Toyota Corolla hatch back. Might car but getting too small.

I had two.. a 2010 and 2012 and couldn’t praise them enough. Never any sort of issue. Comfortable car and a nice drive. Got good mileage to the gallon out of them both. ‘10 was petrol and ‘12 diesel which i preferred. I’ll be looking at them again in the new year.

They are very noisy and underpowered. I think the newer engine (still on old shape Qashqai but lower tax) is noisier again.
Watch the tax as some 1.6 are taxed high.

Would you be putting the dogs in with the seats folded down?

How big are the dogs? You might want to look at the Qashqai+2 which is a bit longer.

I’d sooner buy something like a Focus/Octavia/I30/Ceed estate. They’ll have a lower loading lip and more boot room

If you're going back as far as 09 and not stuck on suv, a nice big estate car will be cheap now.... Qashqai hold their value quite well as far as I know.
You can get something nice if you're open to looking like an e class / a6 / 5 series Estate.
There is the potential for more expensive repairs but it's only potential, not a certainty if you find a well looked after one.

Ah, even the maintenance on a 520d is in another league to a Qashqai, never mind repairs.

Skoda Octavia. They are a great car and have a huge boot.

    Peace and long life.

With two dogs I think you will be much better off with an estate car. Check out a Renault Megane Estate.

We've had 3 of them in our house. One first gen and two current models. I don't know how comfortable the boot would be for two big dogs. Most have a shelf that can be dropped to make the boot a bit deeper but even then, the boot isn't much bigger than a hatchback.

1.6 petrol engine in the first one is a bit of a dog in terms of refinement and it badly needs a 6th gear but the 1.2 and 1.3 petrols in the second gen are ok.

We haven't had any issues really, the cost to change each time to get into another one has been minimal or actually non existent in the latest swap.

Unless you're carrying too Jack Russell's in the boot it's most likely going to be too small.

As others have said, you'd be far better off finding a good used estate.

The 1.5 litre diesel version is the best by far with exactly the right combination of performance, reliability and fuel economy.
