    There’s no grace period.

There is no grace period. Fixed penalty is 3 points and €80 fine if paid within 28 days of the fixed penalty notice. He could have been left at the side of the road and the car impounded.

If he gets the fixed penalty notice he's still getting off lightly. A court summons could mean 5 penalty points and up to €2500 fine or three months in prison. A second offence within three years would also result in an automatic one year driving ban.

There’s no grace period. You can get lucky with a Garda but don't count on it.

What if you fail a test say on brakes on a Monday. Test is out on Wednesday of same week.
Brakes are fixed and retest booked for Monday two weeks on from original test
Does it make a difference having a booked retest or are you just of the road

There is no grey area. If you don't have a valid NCT then you cannot drive the car. No ifs or buts.

You can book the NCT several months in advance, I would always book early and allow time for a retest.

There's only 2 reasons you can drive without a valid NCT
If its just come from an unconnected island or you can drive home from the test centre once the failure isn't classified as dangerous, but you need to trailer it back for the retest.

Isn't the non-connected Island exemption only for cars that are "solely used" on an Island ?
Surely once they are on the Mainland they cannot be driven on a public road without a valid NCT ???

In other words, you would be required to Trailer it from the Terminal once it arrives on the mainland.

edit; after a bit of googling I see that it can be driven "in the 24 hour period prior to a test appointment in the case of a vehicle heretofore used solely on an off-shore island attending for a first test provided evidence of the appointment is produced".
