What's the highest you've ever seen your speedometer?

I despise speeders, the fastest I've ever driven is 120 km/h (give or take accidental drift) when I wasn't using cruise control. But I won't judge you :P I just want to see if the aforementioned speeds are realistic or are they just talking from their arse?

A friend of mine admitted to doing 250 km/h in a BMW 5 series (I don't know whether or not to believe him) and another said he did close to 280 km/h on a Fireblade bike (again, I don't know whether or not to believe him).

A friend of mine did 250 kph briefly on the autobhan in Germany and averaged 240 kph over an hour long journey in a BMW 6 or 7 series. Can't say it was pleasant for me!:o Personally have hit 160 kph but very briefly and much prefer following speed limits.

I'll go with my legal one for this anyway...;) Still a gear left to go, and I certainly used it also but the pic happened to be taken at 240. Saw close to 300 that weekend :)

Why can cars go faster than double the maximum speed limit? Makes no sense really.

Speeding is the norm on the roads near me. I would say it's not uncommon to see cars going at 120 in a 60 kmph zone. There are frequent accidents.

177mph indicated when testing my bike years ago was actually 167 when verified - felt a bit weird - tunnel vision

These type of threads asking people to be honest (not just motoring threads) always attract the outraged. I've learned not to post in them. You're almost always called a liar or a maniac.

In a BMW 530i E39 I did 250 kmph indicated on Speedo or twice the speed limit. Once and only once, only time I've ever gone over 200 actually. Just kept accelerating until the car wouldn't anymore. Then backed right off back down to a manageable 140/150 for rest of journey.

Yeah because most of your threads/post the last couple of months on here weren't you complaining about people who speed and that if a speeder comes up behind you on a motorway you'll deliberately block them from passing you.

Regional road from suburbs to countryside. Lots of spots where people pull out with bad visibility or militant psychopathic cyclists and dog walkers sometimes lurk. Also very very windy bends and a mental 5 road crossroads that surprise the unfamiliar.

I had an auld Diahatsu with dodgy electrics, remember doing 8k revs and the speedo almost going full circle as I was pulling out of the driveway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,318 ✭✭✭deceit

289 recorded by my in car cam on a trip over to London from hamburg a few months back. Showed over 300 on the speedo (I'd say the cam was more likely to be right).

    217km/h in a 2.2 Civic.
However car normally overreads by about 4%, so this was more likely about 208-209 km/h real speed.
I'd say slightly downhill as well, as normally that car won't make over 210 km/h on a speedometer.

Indicated 318 Km/h in reality about 308 Km/h on the motorbike, a modified CBR 1000. A friend got the same bike to 328 the next day.

250 Km/h many times when living in Germany in my own car, 275 Km/h driving in a friends car.

Maxed my current car out at 200 Km/h several times and managed to do 180 KM in 1hr 5 mins . (Lexus RX 400h)

200kph in an EcoBoost Mustang driving to New York from Toronto, spent most of the trip doing 140-160kph with the majority of the traffic.

Around 170-180kph on the M50 driving to hospital at 2am.

I have done 160KM/hour briefly in a VW transporter 15+ years ago. When i was younger still 100mph (i60km) was the target, I did it once once but the daftist speed I ever did was 93mph (nearly 150mph) in a Mark1 escort 1.1 when I was 20 years old. It was down a hill with the wind behind me, she was flat out at that, a lad in a Fiat 131 Mirafiori was trying to over take me. It was stupid there was 8-9 of us between the two cars.:o:o

Roughly 100mph, wouldn't like to crashing at that speed, I know a couple of lads that have done 180mph plus on bikes, scary I'd imagine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,624 ✭✭✭✭meeeeh

There is this nice long hill with motorway going straight for a few kilometers where I come from. Road was relatively empty, mum was driving, we were chatting then she looks at the speedometer and screams noticing she was dong 200kmph. Her reaction and braking was a lot scarier than actual speed. I've driven over 200 kph and I think I was probably in the car when speedometer was showing 220 kph (no idea how accurate) but not very often. I've driven autobahns on the parts with no speed limit and it's grand in low traffic but for me hard work when roads are busier and you are doing longer distances.

My speedo only goes up to 190Kph(Jap import), but the needle has gone well beyond that once or twice.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I just needed to move the sensor about 2mm out from the wheel and now it's actually the most accurate Speedo I've ever had.
It's bang on with satnav anyway.

Anyone that drives the autobahn knows this is realistically impossible, more than likely averaged 160-180 with highs of 240.

Have barely been past 140 kph the last 5 -10 ears to be honest due to the complete overkill road policing!
But a while back i hit 135-140 mph in a BMW 325ci a bit scary being honest as a slightly curved motorway suddenly starts to feel like a hairpin bend!

180mph in a Sierra Cosworth 3 door running a 360bhp engine. Bruntingthorpe. Pretty scary
