VRT is irrelevant when talking about minimum age and mileage.
    VAT is another issue though.

A ferry ticket will not be required if buying in NI. Once the car is 6 months old at time of purchase and has at least 4k miles (6k klms) at time of inspection, it will be fine.

You will need the full V5C from the seller, as well as the purchase invoice.

It was “or” when I bought my last motorbike in NI. It has less than 6k kms on it at the time but was 15 months old.

They must have missed the mileage then. It's been and for as long as I have been driving. I'm not aware of any exceptions for motorcycles. The person at the VRT office can make mistakes, just like anyone else.

    +1
    VAT and Customs Duty
    Value Added Tax (VAT)
VAT may also be due on the acquisition of a new means of transport from another Member State. If you are not entitled to a VAT deduction, this VAT is normally payable with the VRT.

When it enters the State, a vehicle is a new means of transport for VAT purposes if either of the below applies:

it is less than six months after its first registration
it has travelled 6,000 kilometres or less
    For example:

Vehicle is five months old with 8,000km - chargeable to VAT.
Vehicle is seven months old with 5,000km - chargeable to VAT.
Vehicle is seven months old with 8,000km - not chargeable to VAT.

    or
Acquisitions of new means of transport from another Member State
If you purchase a new means of transport from another EU Member State and bring it into the State, it will be subject to Irish VAT. A new means of transport can be either a motor vehicle, vessel or aircraft. The table below sets out the relevant specifications.

New means of transport for VAT purposes.
    Transport Specification 'New'
Motor vehicle Over 48cc or over 7.2kw power 6 months old or less, or travelled 6,000km or less
Marine vessel Over 7.5 metres in length 3 months old or less, or sailed for 100 hours or less
Aircraft Over 1,550kg take-off weight 3 months old or less, or flown for 40 hours or less
