Gas barrels for barbecue

    Hello

Don’t laugh but bought a barbecue in Lidl.

Assembled it there, seems basic but fine. It’s a gas barbecue. See attached picture, it has a place to put the gas barrel. This place is 23cm
At its widest point. Seems small. It’s been YEARS since I even thought about gas barrels but from recollection , I think they are wider than 23 cm at their widest point.

Are there smaller barrels out now or something? Or do we just not have the smaller barrels in Ireland and use the bigger type ones. Or have I mis judged the sizes.

Our gas BBQ has a grey cylinder, I think with Patio Gas written on it. It's a bit smaller than the usual (Calor) orange cylinders anyway that I'd be more familiar with.

Any half decent gas stockist should sell it.

I use the grey patio gas cylinders. I've just measured the base of mine and it's about 24.5cm.

Thanks. Is this the 5kg barrel or 11kg?

The regulator will be specific to a particular type of gas.... What gas does the instructions tell you to use?

This is the thing. It does not really say. Read the book and no specific mention of butane or propane.

    Pics of connector. https://imgur.com/a/QJoq94U

Edit: see attached pic, looks like I can use butane or propane or lpg

As ye can see, haven’t bought gas in over 20
    Years.

If I am to buy a barrel and I don’t have an ‘empty’ to bring back, do I get charged extra?

Think that regulator is for Propane which is the patio gas others mentioned.
Stuff in the yellow bottles is Butane which would require a different regulator.

I got a BBQ a while back which came with a Propane regulator. I just changed it for a Butane one so I could get a refill in my local shop.
Make sure your BBQ is rated for both though.

There is an extra charge if you don't have a bottle to bring back.
Here are prices on Woodies: https://www.woodies.ie/heating-fuels/fuel/bottled-gas
The service charge is the charge for the bottle, so about €60 for both.

    Neither, it's 6kg :)

That is what is called a Jumbo connector used to connect to the standard Butane 11kg cylinders.
Propane regs are screw on with a Left hand 21mm thread.

    Thank you. Finally got sorted

Thought this would be a simple exercise.......get a barrel of gas :)

Didn’t know would have to think about butane, propane etc

Then the different size barrels and connectors

And then if you don’t have an empty to bring back you essentially get charged double.

    Minefield.............ðŸ˜

It’s not just the regulator but sometimes the jets have to be modified too (although that might be piped gas vs bottled). Get it right once and you’ll have it right for ever.
