I got a P21 today and on the bottom it says that 1000 euro will be made to my account.
Is that my tax back? I dont remember applying for it?
When will the money go into my account? does it usually take long after receiving the letter?

If it says you have overpaid and that a refund is to be made to your account that usually happens within 2-3 days of the notice.

Thanks, Ive just got one more question, maybe you can answer? I got a text from tax rebate saying theyre charging me a fee of 97 euro. I dont think I signed up to tax rebate, why are they charging me a fee?

Did you make any past enquiry or have work done by them? Is this communication genuine i.e. not spam/scam? HAve you any communication from Revenue saying they were appointed as your agent for PAYE taxes?

Sounds like you signed up to some sort of scam. Revenue operate everything via MyAccount: https://www.ros.ie/myaccount-web/sign_in.html?execution=e1s1

I didnt sign up to anything, I got a p21 today saying im owed money, then I got a text from Irish tax rebates saying theyve secured me a rebate of the amount thats listed on the P21 and theyve charged me 97 euro
I checked my account on the revenue website and it all adds up.

You need to immediately check that the bank account on Revenue for refunds is your account and no one elses. Some rebate firms get the permission of the taxpayer to have it directed to them then they take their fee and give you the rest.

You could also ask tax rebates to provide you a copy with the agent link which you should have signed for them to be put on as agent for you. Unless they can prove you appointed them as agent they have no cause to act, file or demand payment.

But how did you apply for the P21?

It can happen that Revenue balance taxpayers accounts and issue P21s with no taxpayer involvement. E.G. sometimes if there is a DEASP payment not coded in and taxpayer could underpay. Or if there was emergency or Week 1 in part of the year resulting in overpayments. The system may be tracking and balancing out these items. Now with P-Mod since 01/01/19 such things are less likely to happen.

I have just looked at the website of one of the tax rebate companies and if you make an online application via them you are giving them permission to act as agent and also giving them authority to have any refund transferred to their bank. They would then pass on the net refund after fees to you.

Thanks for that, Im sure I didnt make any online applications, I had been thinking about claiming tax back but never got round to it as I didnt know how to do it and was putting it on the long finger, I hadnt even really looked into it so dont know how they got my information

Well this is worrying. €97 fee aside, the information required for anyone to file for you includes your PPS number. If you are most certain that you have never in the past used any such service then I'd be asking how they came to get the necessary access to file a return on ROS for you.

Going forward you can do all this on MyAccount at revenue.ie and while they like to collect your taxes, they don't charge you for processing refunds.
And again, ensure that the bank account on MyAccount for refunds is yours and no one elses.

A lot of people sign up for these taxback agents without realizing what they are doing. Taxback.com, Irish tax rebates, your tax back, there is a good few around. They are totally independent of Revenue, but they are completely legal.

There are always links going round in social media, people click on them as they don’t realize that when they authorize the company to check if they are due any tax back, they are assigning them as their tax agent. You are signing a legal contract when you give your digital signature.

The company then add their bank details to the taxpayers account, so any future refunds go to them first, they then take their cut, and pass the rest on to the taxpayer.

If you call Revenue, or send a My Enquiry, they will be able to access the agent link form and tell you when you signed up. They can also delete them and their bank details at your request.

As reviews will be done automatically each year now under PAYE modernization, if they are still on as your agent they will get a share of your money for doing absolutely nothing.
