    Howdy folks.

Looking to pick the brain of any VW experts out there.

I'm going to look at a 2007 Passat estate 1.9 diesel today and I want to try and figure out what engine it has with the intensions of trying to stay away from the dreaded BXE engine code.

I have a VIN number, but it doesn't mention the engine code specifically. DO I need to contact the dealer to find the engine code from the VIN?

The other question is with 300k Km's on the clock, even if its a BXE, is it past the point that a conrod might try to escape, with the premise that if it hasn't happened yet, it probably wont?

    Thanks everyone

The engine code is on a sticker in the boot I think.

Also, with the price difference between 11 and 12 year old car not being that big, would you not buy a 2008 and save on tax?

It’s a BXE. Went to look at her today

Drives nice. Had the rear calipers replaced.

Needs a timing belt though, or at least there’s no evidence of it being done any time in the last couple of years.

Yeh, there are a few 08’s around but most are double the price of the 07 I looked at.

Since it’s more of a stop gap car, the tax situation means little to me. I’ll have it 6 -8 months at most.

No. Well at least not yet.

There’s another one in Kilkenny I’d like to have a look at. Similar price but had the tb done.

Bear in mind as well the bxe will be harder sold on in 6 or 8 months.
As colm says the 08 will be more desireable too.
And the saving on tax too
