BMW 320d breather filter

Hi I recently bought a 05 bmw 320d, I noticed there was oil on top of the engine. I asked the seller where the oil may have come from and is there an oil leak. His reply was no the previous owner had drove the car with the oil cap off and caused oil to blow all over the top of the engine. I had been driving the car for 3 weeks with no notice of any leaks or oil on the ground. After the 3rd week of driving I noticed smoke coming from the engine, I stopped and opened the bonnet to notice the oil cap off and oil all over the top of the engine, this then caused the alternator to fail and the car to overheat. I took the car to a mechanic whose diagnosis was a Badley blocked breather filter which caused pressure in the engine causing the oil cap to blow. I’m no mechanic and know nothing about cars. Does this make sense??? I’ve driven the car about 500 miles and seems to be running ok at the moment

My bro -in-law had a freelander a number of years ago (Td4) and if I remember correctly it had the same engine as your BMW.
With only 70K on the clock it lost all its oil and engine had to be replaced. The oil was, apparently , blown up through the dip stick tube and I remember reading up on it at the time and it had happenend a number of these engines (in cars and Freelanders) - and the cause was a blocked breather filter. This caused pressure to build up in the crankcase and resulted in oil being blown out of the engine.
I got the one for the Freelander from a BMW garage and no further problems with the replacement engine.
I'd say you were lucky the engine survived.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, hopefully this has now been resolved, just needed some one else’s opinion as I know nothing about cars.
