I'd love if someone could identify this bird.
There were several of them together. I suspect they might be the young of a very common bird, but I've never seen them before...ever.

    thanks! :)

Imature Carrion crow or Rook judging by sparsely feathered head is it quiet big? Young Raven?

Edit looked again I acually dont think its a young rook cause Rook can have white'ish skin around the beak

Fred Funk just about nailed it! :D

Seriously though? I believe it's a young rook. What in blazes is going on with its head though? God alone knows!

It appears to be this years juvenile. So, obviously, the head should be fully feathered. It's not, obviously. Looks like it's just growing fresh feathers though.

    Most strange!

Yup, they were all the same. There was about 5 or so of them and I'm in County Galway, in an urban area.

Who knows...there could be a nuclear waste dump nearby. Gov will make money on anything these days. The only thing we own are our souls. :p

Young Rook for sure. Strange to see 5 together with the same condition - possible feather mites or similar in the nest(s)?

I've seen a few in that state around the Kildare/Offaly area, wonder if there is a rise in feather mites or something this year?

The swans in my area had their usual 6/8 cygnets this year. They got fleas and looked the same as the crow in the picture. They were all scratching and upset and every cygnet died:(.
The adult swans were also scratching and pulling out feathers.A local told me the reason was, that the swan used last years nest and that was the reason for the fleas.

Swans regularly use the same nest for years on end.

Absolutely. It is the norm to refuse nests from previous seasons.

Looks like some sort of rare Irish Raven Vulture. I can just imagine that head being ideal to stick into a sheeps guts and have a good feed without the bother of bloody feathers.
