MK7 Golf - Radio not turning on

    Hi,

MK7 golf, radio has not turned on since Thursday. I noticed it was very slow to boot up the previous few days, but eventually it did come on and the radio worked etc.

Started the car yesterday and radio wouldn’t come on. Checked fuses and tried a hard reset of the radio (held down power button for 1minute) but still no joy.

Any ideas of cause and how to fix?

    Thanks

There are lots of software revisions for those head units for bug fixes like that where they wont turn on/ off or turn on and off by themselves and other weird stuff, if it hasn't been to a dealer in a year or two I'd book it in to get the 5F unit software updated.

The bad news is, the unit has to be on to take the update so you need a bit of luck there if it's off at the moment. The other bad news is, the 5F control module itself gives a bit of trouble in them and if it's stone dead, it may be the unit itself. They aren't cheap and theres a good few different kinds. They also arent plug and play, if you get a second hand one it will need to be coded.

Thanks for that. Had a feeling it was bad news.

Any idea of cost before I go to the main stealer?

An hours labour for the software update, €100 ish, depending where you are. If it needs a 5F, maybe €1500 ish for a new one supplied and fitted. A couple of hundred second hand if you can find the same part number in a breakers, then you need someone with Ross tech or whatever to code it.
