Best Movie Ever: Competition

So, how about a competition to see the best movie ever? Not too disssimilar to the chocolate bar competition in AH a few weeks ago, though a bit more organised.

    Here's how it works:
    • PM me your top 5 movies in no particular order
    • We'll leave it open for about a week
    • I'll collate the movies, sort by popularity, and pick the top 32 mentioned (maybe 64, but probably not)
    • Then we'll open up for the knock-out stages, two films fight it out. With a tennis scoring system: the first to 6 votes with two clear points ahead. Give reasons for your choice too, just to make it a bit interesting. No time limit, just the first to 6.
    • The winner goes to the next round, and repeat with the next two until we've halved the number
    • Next round, maybe the first to 12, etc.
    • Until eventually we have a winner, and the arguments can begin.
    • I'll try to seed the movies mentioned in the knock-out so we're not starting out with #1 and #2 from the IMDB top 250 list battling it out from the get go.

If it goes well, I could see this happening again with TV shows, books, music, video games, sports teams, whatever!

So, get your entry in, spread the word, get your friends to enter. My PM box is nice and empty so plenty of room for entries.

    And ... go!

Will be in after suitable agonising.

    I'll be doing this.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

That was surprisingly painful. My poor babies!

Edit : **** I've changed my mind about two of them already

    You can do take backsies.

So long as the two you're taking back aren't the really good two that I was impressed at having you include, that is.

Star Wars The Phantom Menace (Anything Jar Jar really)
The Last Airbender (so much better than the cartoon)
Jack & Jill (Adam Sandler Epic)
Sex Lives of the Potato Men (The title alone)
    Catwoman 2004 (who needs Batman?)

    So what do I win?

Will the draw be random to start or will the movies be seeded (say imdb ratings) so we dont get any big clashes early

As mentioned in the OP (:P) they’ll be seeded. Not by IMDb but by number of votes though.

I keep changing my mind too. Five is too small :) There's one in particular that didn't make the cut and it just feels wrong.

In. I picked the first five that came to mind and I'd be surprised if any made to the voting stage,

That’s like Citizen Kane compared to the other one. It’s possibly the worst movie I’ve ever had the misfortune to watch.

I LOVE Rik Mayall in that. :o

They're not in my top 5, but I reeeeeeeeeeeally enjoyed re-watching Oldboy, Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle while thinking about my list :)

    Is light movie discussion allowed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

I'd say you'd have to be careful - you're putting films into people's heads that might not have been there before, skews the list. You want the give that pop into their heads. Even if you talk about only crap films, one man's chunder is another man's cheddar.

Those are quality movies though, reminded me of another I didn't put on mine. 5 is not enough!

    24 entrants.
    88 unique entries
17 that have more than one vote
4 players that have made the top of my own personal rating list :)

Still plenty of time for more entries. Will start the knock-out stages Friday evening or Saturday afternoon.

Good on you Quickbeam, appreciate the time and effort. One rule should be added and that is Shawshank Redemption can't win!

So with an 88 way tie for last place some of my weird choices have a chance then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,712 ✭✭✭Sawduck

I had my top 2 but after that is was very difficult, there was like 20 movies i could have chosen

    106 unique entries
    31 submissions
21 have more than 1 vote

In the interests of fairness, whatever number of 1s I need to reach 32 I'll randomise.

The seeds will be the ones with the most votes. I'm going with 8 seeds. Again, if there's any kind of tie, I'll randomise which go in to the seeding.

I will, however, be running each match in a random order, so you won't know which are the seeds, even if you can make a guess.

Loving this! Seeing the entries has been fun.

Most likely contest starting Saturday afternoon, as there'll be some drinks had on Friday so I won't be around to run :)
