Hi, does anyone know what type of jobs you can get with afternoon/evening hours? I am going to be looking after someone in the mornings starting soon so I'm looking for a job that begins around 2 or 3 until 9 or 10. Anyone any ideas?

I would think a call centre might be suitable for this.

    Cleaner
    Shop attendant
    Bar work
    Restaurant staff
    Factory shift work (might suit)
    Venue staff

Have you a qualification you are looking to use or could use for contract work?

Shift work in factories or warehouses might suit.
    Taxi driver?
    IT?

What do you want to do?

    Pubs shops restaurants hotels.

I used to work for a pharmaceutical company on their production line and did three 12 hour shifts across weekends. No qualifications required. Also did 2pm to 10pm for awhile.

Honestly, I'm not picky. I have only got the leaving cert, no degree. I just want a permanent full time position. Some good ideas here that I will look into. Thanks. Do you find these jobs on jobs.ie or is there other places to search?

If you're looking for jobs such as above with no experience or qualifications required, your best bet is to go direct to the company and ask if they're looking for staff.

Pubs/restaurants may have help wanted signs up. Ask staff working there if they'd keep you in mind.

For factories, call centres etc, check their websites or send an email to their hr department asking for info. Or go to an agency who'd provide you at short notice to places looking for temp staff.

Have a simple concise CV (obviously short given age and experience) ready to share by email if anyone asks for it. On your CV, focus on your personal attributes (hard working, motivated, reliable, good time keeper) etc

For casual roles, be ready to start at short notice and to maybe work a trial period for a few hours or a shift.

Be weary of delivery driving (fast food). For a start, you are supposed to have insurance if using your car, motorcycle for this. In fairness, I have never known anyone, save for Dominos Pizza staff who have insurance for deliveries. It can also take a toll on your vehicle with the constant start/stop. This also eats the fuel, because the engine never reaches a good running temperature. Plus, you will usually finish up at around 1am, leaving you pretty tired for your morning care work. I speak from past experience.

Are you not looking to go to college or other further education or trade?

Without additional skills you'll find it difficult to get off the ground floor.

Also work should be something you enjoy or have an interest in. By saying you are looking for anything that has the hours that suit you is not the approach to take and most employers will see this at interview stage.

Look at what you are interested in and see if you can develop some knowledge in the interest and then see what positions are possible in that area

There's loads of outlets for finding jobs nowadays, from job websites and pages (local job clubs on Facebook etc.), local newspapers, shop windows, bulletin boards in shops (they're still a thing, I think). Good luck in your search.

That's great advice but I really just need a full time, permanent job for now. I'm looking to get a mortgage so that's what I need. So I need to get it soon and for it to be an afternoon/evening job. I know these restrictions will make it harder to find.

If you've just left school and are unskilled, you'll be lucky to get over €10/hour.

As for a mortgage. Absolutely zero chance. Minimum salary of €30+ k a year is required along with savings history, good credit record and permanent employment.

I suspect you're having a bit of fun with your post.

Sorry but I never said I just left school! I've been working on and off abroad.

Me and my partner are looking to buy a house. She's in full time, permanent employment. To help get the mortgage I need to be in full time, permanent employment. I can't work mornings because I'm looking after my elderly mother. That is why I'm looking for afternoon/evening work and why I'm here looking for advice because I'm struggling to find anything.

Apologies, I misread "I only got the leaving cert" as you had just got it.

Plenty of jobs out there if you are willing to work hard. I'd still look at what you'd like to do, previous experience even if abroad and then hit the various job agencies.

You'll see all their details on the job sites and they'll make suggestions.

Unfortunately, what I was working at abroad can't be done here. That's why I basically have to start from the bottom. There's plenty of jobs but I'm not finding many with the hours I'm searching for. I've applied for warehouse jobs so far.

I applied for a good few jobs, even some that don't have the hours I was looking for. No replies even! I know there was the weekend and I need to be more patient but still.

Go with lidl / aldi or a company that gets you qualified while you work.

Whatever you do, don’t rush in to those PLC courses that give you little pay: Research everything carefully.

Agencies all the way for what you are looking for.
Also get advice on how your cv looks. With a lot of these jobs the employer is flicking through 50/60 cv's and choosing 5-6 to interview.

They'll check social media to get a picture of who you are. Good to create a nice inoffensive Facebook profile showing you do things such as DIY / helping with animals / supporting not for profit groups.

Maybe look at learning communication skills for interviews / team leader positions. Some place like toastmasters is good for that (about 100 clubs in Ireland)

Basically you have to sell yourself better than the others.

Once you understand how to do that, getting the job is easy.
