Dual transmission, what do I need to know?

Decided to make the switch to an automatic due to health issues. Have done a private deal for a 2010 1.3 Yaris with dual transmission. I have driven an automatic for a few months before shortly after I started driving, but it didn’t have a manual mode. What are the things I need to be aware of? Is there more maintenance? Is there times when I’d be better off in manual mode? I’m going into this blind really. I’ve been googling but not finding much.

No that’s not it. It’s got the automatic settings on the left and if you pull the stick over to the right it’s in manual with 6 gears. You push up to go up 1 and down to go down 1. It also has paddel shifters behind the wheel.

Sounds like a standard tiptronic gearbox to me, depends on how you want to drive, cruising along leave it in Auto, if you're doing a lot of changing lanes, change of speed etc use the manual part.

Sounds like most autos so. Mine has that option but tbh I've never used it, just leave it in D and the car does it's job.

I presume this is a MMT transmission. Which is a bit of a weird one tbh. It's an automated manual effectively. You can just put it in E (automatic) and just drive it as an automatic. But it offers the option to manually select.

But after a quick google it seems it does have it's issues, I think I'd be avoiding it...

    They’re an awful gearbox

You’ll be whiplashy every time it changes gear.

There are much better options out there so try and pull out of the deal if possible.

Generally, the only time you should be using manual mode (or L, B, 1/2 or whatever is available) is on long descents so you get some sort of engine braking and don't cook your brakes.

Regarding getting a cheap small automatic car, you may be better off looking at Japanese imports. I think the Vitz (Yaris equivalent) was sold with a CVT box over there which is more reliable than the MMT yoke common in Europe. They have a general preference for CVTs there which have no discrete gears (but still have a L or B mode for holding higher ratios). Honda Fit seems like a popular choice too.

Can’t watch that guy, but the Yaris is none of the gearboxes listed.
The nearest thing it is to is manual.

    The Yaris basically has RND+-
