    Hi,

I have 42 acres Sitka Spruce which is 26 years old located in North Leitrim and is separated into 4 plots. It is boggy land, not been thinned, mixed quality and 3 plots have direct road access.

We are not sure now how to proceed. Should we:

    1) Leave as is until it is 30 years old

    2) Sell as is - If so where would the best place be to do this and how much per acre would be realistic for us to receive?

    3) Clearfell - Any recommendations for forester's covering Leitrim/Sligo? What would be a fair price per acre after costs? If we sell the land after clearfelling does the new owner have to plant again and will they receive the premiums?

    Thanks!

Alot of it depends on your current situation and interest in forestry.

At 26 it most likely has gone past thinning and still could be that little bit to young for clearfell.
If your in need of finances now then selling and the land would be the best way forward, alternatively if you are ok at the moment then waiting til year 30 and clearfelling is what I would do.

Selling the land and trees all depends on the quality and size of the trees, same as the clearfell option. A good clearfell should range from €5000 to €10,000 per acre after harvesting and haulage depending on the factors above. Then approximately €1000 per acre to replant it.

If it's sold the new owner cannot claim any premiums on it. The land will have to be replanted but clearfelled land is worth very little.

Alot of it depends on do you want money now or later. Keeping in mind it will take a number of months to get a felling license and then access has to be sorted for timber harvesting.
