Got the idea for this thread from Reddit's /r/OutOfTheLoop page which is an absolute godsend for catching up on viral stories, but mostly only in either the US politics or internet culture context.

If you keep seeing a name, location, event or term in news stories but you don't know the background to how a story started (which the Irish papers are spectacularly bad at reminding people of once a story grows legs, I find), post it here and see if anyone can help!
