the pm2.5 level went up to over 200 micrograms per cubic metre after my wife used her dyson hair dryer. The level is usually lower than 5 in the same room. 200 is well into the hazardous category

    Do go on.

tell her to use the hair dryer in the shower, that way it won't get too dry

I'd be more concerned her spending four hundred on a bloody hair dryer.

having wet hair is good for your health
It may be in small doses, but everyone knows that going to bed with wet hair results in instant death.

You're outing yourself as not being a regular follower of my threads, Bobby of the SS. But this is ok.

PM2.5 is very small particulate matter that has a very bad effect on human health. It's usually generated by activities
that generate lots of dust or smoke.

That doesn't mean the PM2.5 levels increased. The concentration increased at the monitor, which is not particularly accurate anyway.

Also, your wife needs to drop the heat setting to stop burning her hair. Your wife is bad for your health.

24 hour monitoring in place. It spiked when the hairdryer was on and remained high for some time, going down slowly as the air purifier worked. The air purifier circulated the air a lot. The increase was from 1 to over 200. It has not gone above 5 without a clear cause. This is all consistent with an actual increase in levels and not that there were more at the monitor at a given moment.

From what I've read the monitor's values match official figures released for the same places and times. It also is consistent in showing increases when there is something to cause them and only when there is. This is evidence that it is pretty accurate.

Burning hair - yes for sure.

You jumped to the statement that having wet hair is good for your health, instead of saying using a Dyson hair-dryer is bad for your health.

    Sad. That's it really...just sad...pm2.5...sad...

That's not intended to be taken too seriously.

Seems to me that humans just like having problems. Even when they have no real problems, they'll make up some.

    Not an off-the-shelf kit so.

The fundamental issue is you need to get rid of your wife or hair-drying. Is she worth more than a Dyson?

forget worrying about wife spending money on a hairdryer. how much did you spend on a pm2.5 monitor?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,590 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Maybe steam from the shower was dickering the meter.

How have I managed to live so many decades without constant monitoring of Pm2.5 levels or having an air purifier?

Given the dryer, I think you should substitute the word wealth for health in the title. Aldi recently had petrol driven lawnmowers for around €230 - made in Austria.
