Shared Waste Pipe Rights

    There is a shared waste pipe at the rear of my property - 5 terrace cottages (plus the house behind us also run pipes directly into my garden).
    The waste pipe was laid 30/40 years ago and is in bad condition (keeps blocking from bad neighbours) and has cracks.
    We are situated on a main road and there is adequate sewage & water lines out the front of the property that each property could connect to individually.
    What are my rights regarding removing the pipe and getting all properties to connect to the mains directly themselves?
    I am tired of having to wash out the manhole due to bad neighbours flushing baby wipes down the toilet!! I am also building an extension soon and this sewage line will be directly in the way.

    Shared supply pipes on private property would be the responsibility of the land owners. If you are interested in applying for a new waste water connection, you can do this online here www.water.ie/connections/.

    Any other new connections will be up to the individual household owners. If you are building an extension and if there is a requirement to remove the backyard service, then you will have to get this assessed by an engineer. We would advise you to contact the Planning Department of your Local Authority as they are phasing out these old services in certain areas. It would be worthwhile seeing if they have any further information on this.

    If you have any further queries, please feel free to PM us and and a member of our team will do their best to help you.

    Thanks,
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,

    Who would be best to contact regarding inspecting the current waste & water pipes?

    If your query relates to the public water or wastewater mains, please PM your name, address, contact number and details on your query and we can assist further.

    If your query relates to the pipework within your property boundary or a shared connection, we suggest you contact a qualified professional to investigate this further.

    Kind regards,
    Mairead

    Hi Mairead

    Sorry to piggyback on this topic but I have a similar issue. I live in a private residence connected to a shared sewage pipe. It was blocked recently and I had it cleared. The Drainage guy said that the blockage is because the pipe is clay and laid down 30 years ago. It has cracked in two places in the residence next door and needs to be 'sleeved' with PVC. The next door house is a council house. The blockage is affecting me and the 2 houses to the left of me, both council houses. Is this the council's responsibility to fix? The breakage is not on my property. The drainage guy will issue a formal report but I don't know who to contact after.

    Thanks for your help.

    Thanks Mairead

    My local authority is Dun Laoghaire. I will call them. Their website says that waste connections are to do with Irish water. Is that not correct?

    Irish Water are responsible for the maintenance of the public water and wastewater infrastructure. The blockage that you described previously is located on the private side property and would fall under the remit of the individual landowners to resolve.

    If you believe that there is a public side blockage, can you please PM us with the following details and a member of our team will look into this further?

    - Name;
    - Contact number;
    - Full address; and
    - If you have tried rodding the private side pipework?

    Thanks,
    Daniel
