Buying a diesel but only driving weekends

    I’ve always had petrol as drive low miles and prefer in general

    I’m looking to buy a car but all I’m seeing are diesels

    One in particular has the dpf replaced and car looks and runs great but for it being a diesel

    Could it make sense to still buy providing I did drive the car at the weekends I drove at least 20-30km or miles or would that still not be enough to get the car up to a good temp etc?

    If you are only driving 20-30km don't bother buying a diesel. Get a petrol (cheaper to service, lower tax, etc) if that is all you are driving.
    Going to change mine soon and do low miles, thinking of either petrol or hybrid.

    You really don't need a diesel especially if you're going to have to go out of your way driving it for the sake of driving it.

    Maybe post up a budget and some criteria for your potential new car and we could suggest some petrol cars.

    I learned to drive in Mrs $hifty's Seat Ibiza, which was a tiny 1.2 petrol. Far too small for me and my considerable bulk. After I passed my test, I went looking for something with a bit of functionality,style and comfort and a diesel saloon was what I settled on. Everyone I know said I was mad, as I use public transport for work and don't do huge mileage, bar the odd trip to Galway once every two months or so, and up to my relatives in Bettystown once a month.

    I bought an A6 (S-Line Ultra, Black edition :cool:) up North, which is pretty ridiculous for a first car, but it ticked all my boxes. I haven't had any issues (touch wood) and only once have I had to clear the DPF on it. By the time I reached the motorway to resolve this, the fault had cleared already. I've only put 8k kilometres on it since September, and it runs like a dream.

    I regret nothing.

    This is the weirdest thread I've seen here. You have a car already - drive it at the weekends. Buying any other car for a jaunt is madness. You'll be spending additional thousands for no reason.

    People change cars all of the time without it being absolutely necessary

    That seems like mad money for a car with such high mileage, no? Plus, they're tiny on the inside.

    Decent spec focus with 1/3 of the mileage for €8,500 + VRT

    OP you may consider holding on to your 29 year old car for one more year.
    Once it turns 30 you can tax it as a classic for €56 and it will be worth more.

    What exactly are your requirements?

    Is it weekend long distance trips? or just short trips?

    Do you need a large car? e.g at weekend trips you bring a surf board. Or smaller cars ok?just some more info would be good for recommendations.

    I would have thought a lower mileage one could be gotten for that money. Happy to stand corrected of course.

    Was interested in an a5 coupe or sports back . I’m aware of the problems they can suffer from but really like the design of them

    It’s just myself mainly so doesn’t need to be anything big

    That Peugeot was quite interesting but perhaps too small , it isn’t but I just prefer a little bigger

    I would go Mini....I drove one for a few months as a loan car and loved it....or an A3 which is lovely

    A5 with your budget and diesel will be problematic

    I'd have thought buying a French car that's averaged 500km a week for 6 years was lunacy, but there ya go.

    Depends on the french car...

    But a used Focus with a particular diesel engine that is well known for not liking short spins wouldn't be a surefooted choice for the op.

    Have you considered Go-Car OP? By the time you tax and insure a car, you might be able to use one trip by trip for less money.

    From the few a5s I’ve seen around 2008-2011
    10-11k is top price for them and the tougher ones around 5k to 7k

    I know how you feel OP. Trying to upgrade a 2007 Fiesta for something a bit bigger as have a little one on the way. Changing the fuel type to petrol and you're losing around 2/3s of the cars for some categories.

    It depends on budget and how big you want to go of course, keeping the hybrid/PHEV option ticked when searching can help find more options..

    Remember it goes by date of registration, so if it was registered in dec, then you won't get the cheaper tax till until then, and you do need to fill out a form to get it done.

    My car is 22 years old and have every intention of making it to 30 for cheaper tax.
