    Hey all,

Looking for advice on what car to purchase.

I am a 25 year old guy and sitting my first driving test in the near future, if I pass that test I’d like to buy a car.

    Here’s the wishlist:

    Not expensive - under 6k.
Spacious in the front, I’m 6’2.
    Black or blue.
Something that will not rob me with insurance(comparatively I know all insurance is robbery at the moment)
Don’t care about the liter, as in 1 or 1.2 would be grand!

I don’t mind the age one bit, obviously with my budget I would be looking at something 05-12(at a push probably)

Check with insurance company first. They wouldn't even quote for my eldest son on any car below year 2010

For sure, not having been insured before is going to be a problem I’d imagine. If I can make a short list of cars I’ll do my ringing around then :)

Why not just wait until you pass the test to get a car, do the test in an instructors car? At least that way you'll have more options on on what you may be able to buy with a full licence than a learner permit.

I got a really good offer for insurance with a 13 Suzuki with a 1L engine. Some places were going to charge me as much as 3k but I got much cheaper offers with a 13 Suzuki. Think my current insurance is around 600 for a year, and I’m only a couple of years older than you.

I've moved your thread to the buying forum, as it's more suited here than the learning to drive forum.

As for your wish list, plenty of cars for that budget that would suit. And a lot of variety really. Just a couple of points, don't get too hung up on engine size it is largely irrelevant. Pick some cars you like the look of, eg Golf, Focus etc and get some insurance quotes to get a feel for what price you'll pay. This might end up ruling certain cars out based on what you see.

It's worth noting that insurance quote hunting is a pain, and you should really be getting quotes from every insurance company and broker you can find. Here's a list to get you started:

Sometimes it's worth calling as online systems often don't quote for new drivers.
