    Hi all,

I viewed a 2008 E200 this evening. It has 140kms on the clock and looked in good shape for its age.

I don’t know a lot about cars but I always liked this model of merc and it’s more affordable to me now due to its age.

Am I mad buying a merc this old, are there problems to look out for? I heard rust is an issue with this model but didn’t seem to have any when I viewed it. Is there anything else that is know fault or to watch for and are they reliable in general? I know it’s an 11 year old car and anything could go in it like any other make or model, just is there common faults etc.
    Thanks

The Kompressor petrol engines are well known to need the timing chain replaced.

You need to remember with any premium car that even though they can be bought for a fraction of their new price years later, they can still be expensive cars to repair.

I always bought in this age range up to last year when I bought a 4 year old, I have had BMW 5 Series mainly which would be comparable to an E class. Never had much hassle with any of them. Get it checked out and get yourself a good independent Mercedes specialist mechanic to do any work for you if you buy it and you'll be grand. High maintenance bills are generally due to premium brands charging a fortune at main dealers but if you stay out of that network, which you should with the age of the car, prices shouldn't be too severe.
My A6 is going in for a service with my mechanic today actually, not expecting a big bill at all.

Always liked that model of E class too myself, much nicer than the one that replaced it. Uncle had one, big wallowing boat of a thing but extremely comfortable and a nice place to be. Still look well today if in good condition and a decent spec.

Wheelarch rust was a thing on them.

Thanks for the replies, I am getting a mechanic to have a look at it on Monday (hopefully it’s not gone- earliest he can do).

I was torn between this car and a 2008 C class or 3 series, just the E class was always in my thinking one day of owning one. Love the look of it and especially with the sport kit on it. Not sure about timing chain, it has 3 owners and the current owner does not know if it was done or not.

If there is no evidence of it being done then assume it will need doing and negotiate it accordingly off the seller's asking price.

Check the motor tax rate on it. I think the e200 petrol jumped from 636 on the old engine size rate to 1200 on the emissions rate in 2008
