    Budget €19k + trade-in of 131 Hyundai i40I 1.7Lt Diesel with €180K KM.

I am looking for something economical, similar size to the i40, would look at SUV bodytype. Would the new model Peugeot 3008 be an economical option?

Kia Niro EV. You might be pushed to get a bit of finance, but you'll save a lot with that commute.

Do you need or just want an SUV?

Try Mondeo, Passat or Kia Optima. Then if you must a Tucson, Kia Sportage and qashqai

They'll all be around the 2016 year

Is there a waiting list for the Niro EV?

I would have no problem with a saloon car, just giving myself more options. Would there be any hybrid options available to me?

At your price point of 30k assuming 10k for your car a niro makes sense economically. Your going to be spending at least 2500 a year on diesel not counting extra trips and out of work driving. The extra 5k for the niro will be realised in less than 3 years and beyond that you continue to save.

Is it a car that meets your needs though. Can you live in it for a 140km round trip each day? Your paying for a money saving battery, not the very best chair and interior.

Was quoted €6000-€9000 from garages for trade in for my i40. Niro EV would be a non runner for me.

No one knows your budget better than you.

I'd be looking at a well speced diesel saloon 2 or 3 years old. Octavia or superb or similar. Nice tech and an enjoyable reliable ride with good resale values.

    Try the Hyunda Ioniq EV

Do your 140km commute easy and €10,000 less than Kia Niro

Would be surprised if you couldn't get it for €18,000 with your own, new longer range model on the way so use that as bargaining

I'd want to know more about ops journey and real world expectations on driving speeds before reaching for an ioniq. Yes it's in range by an OK margin but sustained motorway speeds at 120 or a tiny bit over will diminish that range further and long term battery degradation won't help.

    Good suggestion though.

140km is not huge but before recommendations is it all motorway or what are you driving on?

Any other requirements outside of work commute? do you have second car for instance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 225 ✭✭K3v

Thanks for the replies. Yes it's motorway driving & using it as the family car at weekends. The other half has a WV Polo, with a daily commute of 10KM!

How is the boot size in the Ioniq? Would need something similar in boot size as the i40.

Would a 2017-2018 Mazda 6 2.2 Diesel be a good option to go for?

No. Similarly to Subaru, Mazda has never managed to make a reliable diesel.

    Christ no

    2010 Citroen c5 2.0 estate

The money you'll save will buy the diesel for 5 years

    Or something similar

Do a financial spreadsheet, to see if you can afford it for a 140 km I don’t think you realise the actual savings an EV will bring you , as for boot size , would you not make a small sacrifice to save around €3k a year on fuel and even savings on tax , maintenance, tolls, and the biggest saving of all.......future depreciation.

If I was in your situation I’d order a new ioniq for Jan 20.

I don't think we can wait until Jan to replace our current car. It has started to give a bit of trouble lately, (new clutch & flywheel), so it needs to go sooner rather than later.

So spend a grand on the i40 now and keep driving it. Order a perfect car for 2020.

    Nothing worse than rushed decision.

I think in mileage terms OP, you're in a little bit of a valley between an EV being a no brainer, and diesel costs starting to get expensive.

If it was ~200km/day, and you could charge in work, your mind would be made up for an EV.

Anything below 100km/day, and a new EV is hard to justify in my book.

A new ioniq is an expensive car. It's not as simple as saying you will save money. Most of us just don't have the up front capital or monthly income to support initial purchase.

I'd buy a mansion somewhere hot on the basis I'd sell at a huge profit and buy a house in Ireland thus saving me money......

But yes agree with an honest spreadsheet on costs to lay it all out.

And that's why we invented banks. If the cost of borrowing money is lower than the savings, it is worth doing.

    .

Well no, a horizontally opposed Diesel engine is flawed from the outset, and Mazdas issues were also design flaws.

OP has a budget of 19 k plus a trade in of 6 - 10 k and will make 3 k a year saving for possibly the next 10 to 15 years and help the planet and more importantly stuff the saudis, hence my suggestion , nothing to do with mansions.

Yeah I forgot to factor in the Saudis into my car upgrade :P.

With the best will in the world, I will only get about €6k for my car. So €25K is a realistic budget. An electric car might be a viable option in 2-3 years when I replace this Car.

Why don't you keep running the i40 for those 2-3years?

Seems a shame to let it go for €6000 with only 180k km on it

Nothing you buy will be much more economical, besides electric

Skoda Octavia. Best car I've ever driven.

Whatever car you buy , the value will be destroyed by the mileage you do. Might be better to go shopping for a new Job closer to home.
