If it's ok for the prisoners, then why not?

If I was a prison officer, I'd want something extra to get me through the day.

Im one and I think it's absolutely disgraceful. Officers should hold themselves to a higher standard than the people society have deemed criminal. Plus they're supposed to be looking after inmates. Imagine a nurse being locked in a ward.

It's inexcusable but thankfully it's not as rampant as a even a decade ago. Seems to be a culture among staff that's dwindling.

I should have put a smiley after my post.

    It was in jest.

Being drunk at work is a sackable offence just about everywhere.
Anybody in charge of these people,or do the inmates run the asylum?

Eh can’t they just be sacked?

I'm sure they can be, but an employer sometimes has to show that they have first tried to help an employee with a drink (or other) problem. It can lessen the chances of unfair dismissal cases being brought in the future.

    Speaking from experience, eh? :D

Do they ****. They're first and only duty is the safety of staff and inmates, including the drunk one.

Wow. So it actually happens !! What percentage of the staff do it ? Do they drink in front of people or do they sneak off to the toilets to neck a bottle ..I can’t understand how it’s tolerated at all.

Not quite. ;) I've been working in the same private sector place for many years, so I've seen how it's handled.

Okay, they don't have to, but sometimes they do.

I think it's more a case of reporting into work under the influence rather than drinking on the sly in a bathroom. That would include reporting back on duty after break periods.

They're probably all on the hooch.

I personally know of one P.O that was given a promotion and was that drunk he was unable to walk across the yard to the Governor's office to accept it. You can probably guess from my username where the prison is, altho we do have 2 :p
