When a mysterious alien Artifact lands on Earth, Commander Niko
Breckinridge (Katee Sackhoff) has to lead humanity’s first
interstellar mission to its planet of origin, while her husband
(Justin Chatwin) tries to make first contact with the artifact back on
earth. Another Life explores the miracle of life, how precious life
is in a universe mostly empty of it, and the lengths we will go to
    protect the ones we love.

Looking at this makes me think of how much I really want season 4 of the Expanse.

I want to see this now!

    Drops on July 25th.

So a less horror infused Nightflyers? Though there's really no sense of the shows direction at all...

I looked at the cast and crew on IMDB after I posted yesterday. Untested but potential was my take away.

The trailer looks legit like the Aliens universe so it's got a decent hard sci-fi vibe going for it. Katee Sackhoff reinforces that.

So I looked to the Writer Director combo. Chunks of work on Killjoys and Altered Carbon caught my attention. So there's potential.... potential.

    Full trailer..

Story/plot not catching my attention too much. Special effects not as good as the teaser.

Bits remind me of Arrival. One bit looked a little Klendathu

    Definitely an arrival feel there.

It's a very choppily edited trailer, some of the dialogue very broken, so I'm going to give this the benefit of the doubt that it's simply an underwhelming promotion. Do we know how "original" this Netflix Original is?

Though the best bit is that Sackoff reminds me that it has been ages since I last watched Battlestar Galactica. Must dust off the DVDs.

Awful, SyFy-channelesque muck, lasted half an episode :(

It's a true Netlfix original in the sense that it's not made or funded by another broadcaster with Netflix rights in other territories (like Nightflyers for example). As far as I'm aware though, Netflix doesn't originate any film or series in-house, they're all acquisitions either directly from producers or in tandem with other broadcasters/studios.

It's been torn apart on the IMDB reviews, but I might watch the first episode to see if the abuse is justified. :p

Crazy storyline with a fair bit of PG rated sex and violence. Disappointing to see a good actress stoop so low. Strangely addictive though so will probably finish it.

And as is the nature of the internet, something being torn apart this definitively, has me totally curious as to just how awful it must be...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,397 ✭✭✭✭FreudianSlippers

Shame as I was kind of looking forward to it, but in all honesty Katee Sackhoff hasn't done anything good since Battelstar and, looking back, even in that she was hardly stretching her acting.

I'd have to hugely disagree with that statement Longmire was a fantastic show and the 5 seasons of that are some of the best on TV in the last decade.

Not a terrible series but pretty much SyFy quality - lots of filler junk that was totally pointless and quite a few groan moments
Katee Sackhoff was horrible but the other actors were worse.

Arrival rip off basically as already said with no redeeming qualities

And took the plunge: holy hell that was the worst hour of television I've watched in some time. Shoddy and amateur, the early 20s crew in trendy clothes a transparent attempt to "CWify" the story, at the expense of any common sense. The inter crew conflict was abysmally hamfisted, again making no sense. The Earth sections was a cut price Arrival.

What on earth possessed Netflix to take this on.

if your looking for a proper Sci-Fi show, watch the expanse. its excellent

    i'm enjoying watching it...
i wouldn't say it's amazing but definitely worth a watch. katee sackhoff is amazing though. i like the william guy, an AI learning to be a person, interesting exploration

definitely an arrival feel, doesn't seem super focused, but enjoyable. on ep 4 or 5 now

No way I could get past the warmed up CW cast, flouncing around without any uniforms and immediately getting into fights. Or the "hand picked" former captain who goes from zero to murderously mutineering in a second.

I get SciFi demands some suspension of disbelief, but only for the fantastic IMO: I can't get behind this NASA equivalent suddenly operating like a hormonal Gap store because, "drama!". Apparently PVC trousers and pumps are approved items on future space missions.

it's a little bit riverdale in space all right!

I was watching the trailer on Netflix they play when you hover on the show and was thinking wow, Katie Sackoff's acting has really improved...then I realised it wasn't really a trailer, it was just her being her promoting the show on-set. Her actual acting in the show is just....fine but unremarkable.

Kinda weird choice by Netflix to use that to sell the show. Also agree about The Expanse. It's the best sci-fi show since Battlestar (which is the undisputed king)

I'm going to go against the grain and say that I really enjoyed this! Yeah it felt a bit cheap in places but the plot moved along nice and quickly, it kept me well entertained.

Same here. Sure, it is not a masterpiece show, and it feels familiar because it borrows concepts from other series. But it is entertaining and I actually liked it. It is not as serious as Star trek or Battle Star Galactica, but then I am a fan of the Red Dwarf so I do not mind some sci-fi frivolity.

Watched episode one last night and for me it was awful. Acting was wooden and storyline was awful. A crew heading to make first contact with Aliens and they never meet each other until they wake up aboard the ship.
I like sci fi, but not this show.

    Abysmal.

I think it was a "Close Encounters of the third kind" rip-off. The Erik guy pretty much just re-enacting Richard Dreyfuss' attempt at speaking with aliens.

The plot explanation for the mutineering made no sense. The guy wanted to get back to earth sooner so he did something that would ensure he was put in prison when they got back? Made no sense.

    Watched the first episode recently.
The word I'd use to describe it is "trashy"

    This too shall pass.

It would be funny if Netflix announced a 2 season renewal after all the cancellations of loved shows

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Somehow renewed for a second season by Netflix.
The renewal comes three months after the series debuted on Netflix to largely negative reviews, with The Hollywood Reporter's chief television critic Tim Goodman writing, "There's really no other way around this — the work on Another Life is not good."

Has to be a tax scam, or else the rubber-necking on this was so high it skewed the stats into pursuing a second season. Without doubt the worst episode of television I've watched in years, so truly... there is no god.
