That RTE woman's eccentric newsreading delivery seems to be getting even more peculiar. Is this policy designed to make the news amusing instead of scary?

Caitriona Perry? She does have a very squeaky, little girl voice.

Not like Don Cockburn, now there was a voice for the ages. Richer and darker than a Bournville chocolate bar, virtually amber in texture. There's none of that gravitas anymore.

I don't mind the variety of voices and their foibles as long it isn't Brian Dobson and Charlie Bird shouting at me.

"And finally, in lighter news today, the Soviet Union has launched an all-out nuclear strike on 25 NATO targets. Mutually assured destruction is guaranteed to exterminate all life on Earth by the end of this bulletin.

    Good night and sleep well."

Catriona Perry lacks the gravity and menace exuded by Charles Mitchell and Don Cockburn. Back in the old days if you weren't happy with the evening news then Mitchell would come around to your house and beat you up.

But first, today in Northern Ireland ...

    FYP

Ha, I think that's a variation on the old joke about the late, great Colm Murray

    "Tonight's sporting headlines:

Sonia O'Sullivan wins triple gold at the Olympics,
Leitrim hurlers beat Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Final
And, Michelle Smyth de Brún is declared innocent by FINA...

    ... But first, to racing"
