Holes in your socks

Do you have holes in your socks? If so, do you get these easily or after years of wear and tear?

I have just discovered holes in a pair of socks that I really love. I’m crushed. :( I can’t seem to have a pair of nice socks without getting holes in them after a few months. It’s a royal pain in every orifice. I’m constantly having to buy new socks and I can’t be arsed darning up the holes (does anyone even do that any more?).

Any tales of sock holes among you AHers? Just why do some people wear out socks so easily? Is it the shape of their feet, their toes or are socks just crap in terms of quality these days?

    Any suggestions? Possible solutions??

Of course my socks have holes, it’s how I get my feet into them!

    Cut your toenails.

Overgrown hooves are both unsightly and lethal for socks

Thanks but I keep my toenails trimmed and tidy so it’s not that.

    Buy bigger size socks?

I never get holes in my socks

I find it all depends on what brand of socks you buy. I bought socks in Kildare Village about 2 years ago and they are still as good as the day I bought them. Each pair is worn once every 12 days.

I have bamboo socks that appear not to get holed

My butler monitors wear and tear of socks and ensures even wear by systematic circulation of them.

Like a team of finely tuned professional footballers, I rotate my socks on a regular basis to maximise potential and limit wear.

    They're very holey

My wife complains when I wear socks during sex. Suppose she’s right, a condom would be better ... titter

Yeah, the metal ones are probably best, hard enough to hole......

Darn it. What would you do if your bicycle or car had a puncture? You'd mend it.

This is why God invented mothers.

To mend your punctures while you darn your socks.

Are you one of those people, like myself, who has favourite things of the most mundane nature? Favourite mug, favourite spoon, favourite cereal bowl, favourite T-shirt, favourite socks.

    Is that normal?

Learn to sew or get someone to sew the holes for you. A tailor shop would do it too if you really want to keep the socks.

The dogs love my socks. I have to give them the matching one when they chew a hole in one. Saves breaking in a new pair

Better still, learn to knit. When it was colder lately I could not find two socks so I knitted a new pair,..

Oh and darning is a specialist skill

There's a lot to be said for a good sock rotation system.

I walk a lot during work... changing pairs of socks each day, a pair would last me a month before the heel wears thin and breaks into a hole trying to put them on.

    I keep sock businesses afloat!!

Major update: My holes always appear in the heels. What can I do here. Shave dead skin from my heels? Get the fish to eat dead skin maybe?

Ah, but freshly cut toe nails have quite the sharp edge to them. I give them a quick rub of a file to take the edge off - sock holes are the very bane of my existence.

No measure is too outlandish if it prevents holes, also (goes with out saying, but...) at the very first sign of one appearing the sock and it's opposite number must be destroyed by fire to prevent contagion spreading to the rest of the sock herd.

All joking aside, I have not worn a sock a second time in about 3 years. Once I found out how cheap they were in pennys I just buy a new pack every week.

I love the feel of the new sock on foot, so give the old ones to charity. I have a big bag in my room of them and just wash and donate once a month or so.

That's just sooo much effort. I wear mine for 3/4 days at a time so that way I know they need to be washed. the holey socks is definitely down to not cutting your toenails often enough

A sock with a hole is worth more than no sock at all ...

Wash them less. Nothing holds socks together like a good crust.

More realistically tough I find heel holes develop less if you don the sock with a roll rather than with a pull.

Not when running I find :) Nothing brings up a god awful blister worse than a sock with a hole. Running entirely without a sock never seems to cause that.
