How can I clean or restore this wood floor?

Typical wood floor in an office. Castor wheels on on office seat rolled all over a particular section for years. Floor has blackened, probably from crud/food rolled into it via the castors and footfall. Varnish lifted. Looks terrible. Any suggestions on how I could at least clean this floor and then possibly restore it. The remainder of the floor is fine, just this one very bad patch.

    sorry didnt see that.

    is it solid or semisolid
    what wood

have you tried sanding some of it to see how deep the staining goes

I would say semisolid. Not sure if it is an impregnated stain ....maybe layers of crud that have been compressed down to a flat black mass.

Spray WD40 on to a clean cloth, rub a small section at time in a circular motion.

Would that effect any future finish being applied. A lot of car body shops wont like it inside the door due to the problems it causes

I doubt it's a mass sitting on top. Scrap at it a bit to see with a sharp scraper . My gut tells me its water or chemical damage. The finish has worn off from the wheels
Any dirt or dirty water will soak in then stain.
If its oak or similar hardwood it could be a reaction between the tannins in the timber and the chemicals . You often see this from dog pee . You can create similar staining on oak with vinegar and iron fillings .

Fixing it is a tricky one. Sand a bit and see how deep it is. If it's not too deep then you could sand the whole floor and refinish. If its deep then either replace or sand and stain it darker to cover it
