this is what i have. pretty old. i use it occasionally. was thinking of upgrading ....something less old! what should i be looking for? i am going to stay with nikon

The D3500 is the entry level Nikon DSLR and is very good. 24 MP compared to 6.1MP on your D40! Can be picked up at a good price online.
