Mullingar has 3 decent lakes for swimming, Lough Owel (diving board just off the N4), Lough Ennell and Lough Derravarra (just north of Collinstown village).

That diving board is a great spot. I always stop there if I'm on the N4 in summertime.
BTW don't imagine that lakes are inherently safer.

    Seawater is more buoyant.

I'm the same, the little one's mammy is from mayo so stop there on the way down and back with the kids..
Sole reason for lake or river is she didnt want to go to the beach!

Anyway, we went to Carlingford, had a great day swimming then up the town for some fish and chips!

If youre in town (Dublin) get the Dart out to 40 foot swimming spot at Glasthule Dart stop. Another great swimming place, and no sand either.
