I'm trying to connect a HP Laptop to a HP PC to transfer files from the laptop hard drive to the PC hard drive. Can anyone recommend what cables are needed to connect these correctly. Thanks in advance

this is actually pretty awkward as pcs are usb hosts.

if you can get your hands on a usb hard drive (even just to borrow) or a large memory stick that would the better option.

you need a usb cable with the same male connector on both ends and then do some fiddling in windows. or an adaptor to fit on an usb male to female lead

Maybe things have changed but I used to be able to transfer from PC to PC using an ethernet cable. Just had to enable sharing in Windows.

yes you're right that is an option yes.

if you share the drive out you can do it

if a modern home laptop may not have Ethernet

That laptop has an ethernet port

Try connecting an ethernet cable between them and see if it shows a link ( lights on socket on desktop illuminate, Windows shows a link)

If no link, you need a crossover ethernet cable

Might be easier to buy a memory stick. Just checking Harvey Norman but its a toss up between -

    Integral Memory USB Key | 64GB | €29.90
    Sandisk Cruzer Blade USB Key | 32GB | €34
    Integral Memory USB Key|16GB | €11.90
    Sandisk Cruzer Blade USB Key | 16GB | €19.90
    Sandisk Ultra USB 3 | 64GB | €64.90
    Sandisk Ultra USB 3 | 32GB | €39.90

    64GB Integral Memory (€30) or 64GB Sandisk Ultra (€65)?

Recommendations from anyone in the know would be welcome.
    Thanks

How much data have you to transfer? Have you USB 3.0 ports on the laptop?

I will need to transfer about 2GB x 30 of data. I honestly haven't a clue if USB 3.0 ports but checking device manager it says 'Generic USB Hub'. Thanks

USB 3.0 are usually coloured blue. It will take a fair bit of time to transfer 60Gb of data but any 64Gb USB stick will do ultimately.
