There is something on alright. I saw some lads in the LIDL in East Wall in what looked like 2 Mirafioris to me. All stickered up and in matching T shirts.

That’s an FSO Caro which didn’t come out till 1991. Something strange there if it’s on ZV plates?

Just checked into this a bit more and it’s registered as 1984.

Front end swap or something? Has the Caro sticker on the rear quarter so maybe it’s cloned.

It’s in Ireland since March 2018.

I've seen pictures of the interior. It's a 1994 model unless someone went to a lot of trouble to change the engine, interior and bodywork.

1994 doesn’t have the bonnet scoop though?

Is it like a Talbot / Sunbeam Horizon

EDIT just checked close up and the door handle / keyhole is different.

I think from 1994 the got offered with some of the K-series engines. Few other Rover bits in their too. There us a good write up on aronline.co.uk about it all.

I remember them on the road when new here back in the late 80s and early 90s. They always just seemed to rust and be rubbish in comparison to the Skoda, Yugos and Ladas.

There really used to be such a diverse range of brands.

Yes there was, Simca being another one...I think that there was some kind of amalgamation of brands, under the Chrysler umbrella, if I remember right.

I think they just stole the design from the Talbot and made them using cheaper materials. Some minor differences is all.

There's a lot of misty eyed reminiscing here, i worked in a Garage around that time and see a few of these come in as trade ins and they were heaps of dirt, not by todays standard but by the standards of the day.

They were well ****e. They all seemed to rust from new and trim used to just fall off.

They made Ladas and Skodas seem rock solid never mind Toyota's.

Polonez was designed by Walter da Silva, hardly anything was stolen...

    Which Talbot?

Keep in mind the Polonez came out in 1978

They were one of the reasons there were so many Garages in operation back then !!!:D:D:D

Is it the Horizon hatchback maybe? No relation afaik.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The Horizon came to market the same year as the Polonez so
    that theory can be debunked.
Aside from that, the Horizon is front wheel drive where the Polonez is rear wheel drive so there’s no way one is based on the other.
The Polonez was an updated Fiat 125p anyway.

Something fishy about ZV plates indeed.
This Polonez is clearly 1990s car.

And BTW for those of you who don't know and didn't read the link above, Złombol is a annul charity rally which starts from Katowice/Poland with route to some remote place of Europe and beyond (different every year)
All money raised goes to orphanage homes in Poland. Teams taking part need to raise money from sponsors to be enrolled. And most importantly their car needs to be from Eastern Bloc countries from pre 1989 era or closely related if newer - doesn't need to be a classic or perfect condition (Złombol translates something like Scrap-rally).

This year - Ireland was the destination - afair somewhere in Wicklow mountains.

Must have been plenty of cars like in OP as there were over 400 cars taking part this year.

I was considering going myself, especially that I have FSO Polonez like in OP sitting on my driveway (my friend parked it there for a year once he's gone travelling) and that FSO Polonez has already done Zlombol rally 3 years ago from Katowice to Tunisia.
Unfortunately I didn't manage to organise enough time and fund to go. Still sad about that.
