My 5 series is now out of its BMW service plan and is approaching its service interval (the large one so its going to need oil change, oil filter, air filter, micro filters and fuel filter changed).

I have taken a quick look at ISTA regards what it recommends for priming the fuel filter and surprisingly there isn't anything stated other than how to physically change it.

When I used service my old car when changing the fuel filter (VW) I used prime the new filter by turning the ignition on without starting the car a number of times for the fuel pump to prime the new filter and purge the air out of the system to prevent dry cranking the engine.

I am assuming that with the BMW the approach is similar?

If it anything like 320d 2013 there is no priming just change fuel filter just press start button few times prime it .This is what I did when I changed it and it started with no problem

I think this may be the case with perhaps older cars however when the car is set to ignition I have never heard the fuel pump so thinking perhaps the BMW only calls for fuel when its cranking/running (perhaps a safety feature in the event of an accident). The VW also had a return feed to the tank on its fuel circuit (in/out of the filter) making it easier to bleed.

On a few of the BMW forums particularly for the X5 there is a procedure on the service menu on ISTA+ for bleeding the fuel system. Its two stages for the first it runs the pump for 3mins (when the car is not running) and the second stage requires the car to be started and ISTA+ holds the revs steady at approx 2k for about 10mins to keep the fuel pressure high to purge the air from the fuel line.
