The Canaries over New Year

Looking at booking a week in the Canaries over New Year. The flight prices are really high at the moment. Anybody know if I'm better off waiting and see if they come down? If not, any suggestions for other good winter sun destinations that won't break the bank?

Being probably the most popular winter sun destination from IRL you're going to find Christmas & NY prices high enough. That being said if you can wait and are flexible on dates you could bag the odd bargain. While we generally book flights/accom separate, you could find last minute packages at reasonable prices.

Just on weather, Lanzarote has had somewhat of a mixed bag Oct-Apr last few years, Tenerife is somewhat better and Gran Canaria usually scores the best weather with Puerto De Mogán and Puerto Rico the better spots there. That being said for value on the ground meals out etc. I'd find Gran Canaria the dearest, Tenerife the cheapest and Lanzarote in the middle.

We're not really flexible on dates due to work and school holidays so I'll keep an eye on it. GC is the preferred option, have stayed in Puerto Rico before and really liked it. Not too keen on Tenerife, but we've had good experience in Lanza too before. Just never went at Xmas/NY time.

    Define 'mixed bag'

I was in Lanzarote in early Feb 2019 and mid March 2018 and during both weeks, the weather was fab - decent temperatures (high teens) and hardly any rain.

Not saying that's guaranteed at any stage - weather is hit miss no matter where you go. But I'd like to know if there are any hard facts behind that statement above.

I have been to Lanzarote 3 times in January as had semester exams after Christmas. The weather is hit and miss - you might get 22C during the day if you're lucky but there are also rainy days which can be boring unless you are up for a free tour up to the caves etc with a few stop offs at shops selling mattresses etc.

No hard facts which I can link you to unfortunately, just my own experience of somewhere between 35-40 visits to the archipelago over the past 16 or so years, most usually 10-12 days at some point in Oct-Dec and again around Mar-Apr with the odd trip otherwise. In recent years it seemed to me that Lanzarote was more prone to cloudy / unsettled periods during Oct-Apr than the others. Of course one can be unlucky as happened last November when we got rain/showers for all bar one day. We also had a December one year with wall to wall sunshine. As you said, weather is hit and miss.
