Broadband Speed Mystery!

    Hi,

    Forgive my ignorance but I'm looking for any guidance on an issue relating to the best available phoneline (ADSL) broadband speed in an area of Castleknock - Peck's Lane, Auburn Avenue.

    I am currently with Virgin Media and am out of contract and want to move on from them because of the high monthly cost. Obviously, Virgin don't use the phoneline for broadband as it is via cable and the speed is fine at 40+mbps.

    I have looked into moving from Virgin this past week by examining the other options available - Eir, Sky, Vodafone - all of whom provide broadband via the phoneline. To my surprise, the best available speed available from all 3 service providers in 3 or 4 mbps which is not an option for me as it is so slow. I looked into the speed of other addresses in the area out of curiosity and we are all restricted to this very limited ADSL speed and I just cannot understand why this is the case. The cabinets are within 500m as they are centrally located on Auburn Avenue. I appear to live in a blackspot of approximately 100 houses or so nearer the Navan Road end of Auburn avenue and Pecks Lane which are restricted in this way. It is frustrating because it appears we are essentially locked into Virgin Media indefinitely given that the alternative is so slow.

    Does anyone know why the phoneline speed should be so low, none of the service providers appear to be able to answer that question. If I walk 300 metres down Auburn Avenue to a different property and out of this 'blackspot' nearer the Navan Road side, the available phoneline speed shoots up to 60mbps or more.

    Any comments or suggested alternative options most welcome!

    You appear to be direct fed, cables laid in the 70s/80s/90s didnt route via a cabinet but directly to the exchange. This was a sensible decision at the time but as we now tack VDSL onto an ageing network its a limitation.

    The medial centre:
    "eircode":null,"county":null,"date":null,"error":null,"fullAddress":null,"townEnabled":false,"maxDSL":null,"maxHSI":null,"maxFTCHSI":null,"maxNGB":"4M_384K_R","maxNRA":null,"maxFTCNRA":null,"maxDSLServiceCode":null,"maxHSIServiceCode":null,"maxFTCHSIServiceCode":null,"maxNGBServiceCode":"NGNBMB8M","maxNRAServiceCode":null,"maxFTCNRAServiceCode":null,"phase":"No Fibre","phone":"01-8217548","validationType":"phone"

    In such a case you can stick with Virgin or go slow. That won't change for 2yrs+ when SIRO/OpenEir Urban FTTH is deployed on your street.
