Ford Used Car Extended Warranty

I just purchased a 2016 S-Max from Ford. It has 70,000km mileage on it and 18 months left on the warranty (Jan 2020). 1 previous owner.

I have been offered the option to extend the warranty by 2 years at a cost of €600. I'm trying to assess whether this is good value for money? It's a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question....but is a warranty like this worth buying?

I do plan to hold on to the car for at least 3.5 years.

    Any views welcome. Thanks

Will the warranty cover the 4 point clutch and DMF? If so go for it.

    If not, I wouldn't bother.

Depends on what value you put on €600 and what happens. It could be money well spent and peace of mind if something expensive goes wrong or it could wasted if nothing breaks in that time. Read the terms and conditions of the extended warranty to see what it covers because as the car gets older then certain things may be excluded due to the risk of failure being higher.

Very few warranties would cover a clutch or DMF unless the parts were found to have failed prematurely, they are classed as consumables just like a tyre or brake pad.

Uttered 7 months or so left on the warranty, so if you can add 2 years to that for €600 then it’s certainly worth it.

Sorry, not sure I follow your point about 7 months left?? Is that because of the mileage?

Jan 2020 is 7 months away or did you mean 2021 in your original post?

Apologies, I meant Jan 2021. 18 months from today. Forgetting what year it is!

Not sure I'd be inclined to. If you have owned since new and well serviced it the chances of a fault within warranty that exceeds the cost is now slim.

They’ve only just bought the car. You’re saying a fault in excess of €600 is unlikely on a diesel C-Max? We got a quote of €1500 for a mini wiring loom for the injectors on a 1.5 TdCi a few months ago. That’s before you get to the stuff that was done on warranty while it was valid.
    Servicing won’t stop random faults.

OP is it 2 years on top of what’s left to on the warranty or 2 years from now??

It’s 2 years on top of existing. So basically for €600, I will extend the warranty out to Jan 2023 from Jan 2021. There is also no limit on the mileage in the extended period. I think current warranty is Jan 2021 or 100,000km.

Asked a few more questions on it today....specifically whether clutch is covered. Response:

“Clutches have been carried out before but they will of course need to be inspected to make sure it is not down to drivers error.”

I wouldn’t expect clutch to be covered, even on a new car it’s treated as a wear item, so unless it’s a manufacturing defect then you’re on your own.
but if you’re getting warranty cover till 2023, that’s better than a lot of new cars. It’s a no-brainer.

It's hard to get Ford to pay out under their regular manufacturers warranty, any extension sold onto that I'd expect to find coverage fairly tricky altogether with more t's and c's than the end of a high cost loan radio ad. Seems like a nice idea to add two years for €600 but the chances of a successful payout I'd say are slim enough. I'd definitely be reading the fine print before committing.

Are you sure its provided by Ford and not the dealer selling you a Mapfre/ Carprotect insurance policy?

Yes, you're correct, it's actually a policy with Autoprotect. From an email I got back today from Ford....
Regarding the Warranty it is done through a company called Autoprotect. We carry out all the work ourselves and bill them directly.

They did tell me this upfront last week when first offering me the extended warranty. I had just forgotten the name of the company. Anyone dealt with an Autoprotect policy before? Attached is the "glossy brochure" I got from Ford. Going to ask for a copy of the full terms and conditions.

Thanks for all the feedback/comments so far. Much appreciated.

This company use mainly Advanced pitstop as the repair there are other companys on this but the ones nearest me are all advanced pitstop.

I know a lot of people are in the mind of advanced pitstop would be the last place they would bring car for repair.

Ford have told me they would do any repair work themselves. I don't think Advanced Pitstop come into the equation

I’m not as enthusiastic about it now.

Better off putting the €600 into a piggy bank imo. €600 wouldn't fully cover a worst case scenario with the car but a worst case scenario isn't too unlikely and if it does happen, €600 would be a decent cushion.

So I rang Ford to speak to them a bit more about the warranty. I have a bit more confidence in it now. The way it works is that all my dealings are with Ford. I bring the car into them and they do all diagnostics/repairs. The repairs need to be approved by AutoProtect, but Ford manage all the contact with them and billings etc. So I only have to deal directly with Ford, it’s just the case that the warranty is underwritten by AutoProtect.

Apparently most of the main dealers….Windsor, Joe Duffy etc would also use AutoProtect for their used car sales warranties. My Ford contact tells me they wouldn’t deal with them if they were very difficult or always trying to find excuses not to pay etc.

There is no limit on mileage and no limit on number of claims. There is however a €5k limit on the claim amount. They sent me a copy of the T&Cs and there doesn’t look to be anything too sinister in there. Attached a couple of extracts around what is covered/not covered.

I also got a more specific quote….which is €569 for the 2 year extension to the warranty (from Jan 2021 to 2023).

Make of it what you will, but Ford are obviously going to paint it in a pretty light but all that will happen in 2022 when your clutch slave cylinder goes is Ford will say to you "Autoprotect say they wont cover that and they're the under writers" and that'll be that.

Yeah, a lot of places use that style of "warranty", but that doesn't mean they are any good. They are really only a commission earner for the salesman and a get out of jail free card for dealers who dont want to stand over a car themselves.
